Dr. Vincent Paul Gibbons

Obituary

MONONA - Dr. Vincent Paul Gibbons was the proud and loving father of Joshua, Liam and Gabriel, and adoring husband to Marcy. Doctor Gibbons’ life was filled with accomplishment; he liked to be very “productive” in his own words. Born in Cambridge, Mass., April 21, 1949, he attended St. John’s Prep and Harvard College, which were his most cherished and carefree years of life. He had fond remembrance of growing up in New England with his best friend, Morris, living in Marblehead, Mass., then attending college.

Vincent went on to achieve a medical degree from Georgetown Medical School in Washington, D.C. in 1975, choosing to pursue a career in pediatric neurology. He believed in the power of children to thrive and lead healthy lives if given the best medical care.

After a long illness, Dr. Gibbons died on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, in Monroe, Wis., on the Catholic commemorative feast day of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael: the protector, the messenger, the healer.

Dr. Gibbons was a passionate educator and loved his students and was affiliated with many professional organizations as an advocate of medication for orphan diseases, pioneering health informatics and innovative procedures for the treatment of epilepsy. After a lengthy career of over 40 years, Vincent devoted what he considered the highlight of his calling to volunteering at The Catholic Multicultural Center of Madison where he served food to the hungry (honoring his namesake), and counseled families dealing with their children’s developmental disabilities.

He loved his work and the sea; he was not far removed from listening to worldwide music or Sunday night public radio, drinking many cups of coffee in a day (the cheapest beans money could buy), baking bread or wearing his favorite Greek mariner’s cap.

A private family service will be held.  Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I remember Vincent well from Star of the Sea grammar school as well as Saint John's Prep, where he was a classmate of my brother, Dan. I also remember him as a fellow altar boy. He seemed always caring and gentle. My one very specific memory of Vincent is the closing line of his valedictory speech at St. John's Prep in 1967. He said: "We have a universe to explore and a lifetime to explore it in." I find it inspiring sixty- five years later. My sincere condolences to all his family and friends. Bill (Walsh) Rogalski

We only get one valadictorian and he was ours of the St. Johns Class of 1967. While never close, I admired just how plane smart he was...not sure if he ever got a B and it was no surprise he was scooped up by Harvard. Later it made total sense this man with a documented superior brain and intellect would go on to study and practice care and treatment of epilepsey. So sorry for the family and for the loss...the world is better for Vincent's life and work. May perpetual light shine upon him, Jack Kareckas, '67
