Obituary

STOUGHTON - Harold Melvin Hanson Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, at Azura Memory Center in Stoughton, Wis.


Harold, the second of five children, and first son was born in January of 1936, in La Crosse, Wis., to Catherine and Harold M. Hanson Sr. A short time later, in pursuit of work, Harold’s father moved the family to Austin, Minn., where his dad went to work for Hormel Foods. Harold attended Austin High School, graduating in 1954. In high school Harold met Margo Nelson and following his graduation they were married in September of 1954.  


In Austin, Harold and Margo had four children, Richard, Thomas, Catherine and Nancy. Harold worked at Lars’ Standard Service Station in Austin, before taking a sales position with Hormel. In 1966 Hormel promoted Harold and the family moved to Madison, Wis. In 1974, following a divorce, Harold married Marie Sieger and moved to Oregon, Wis. Marie had three children, Gary, Debra and Brian. Harold left Hormel and went to work for Neesvig’s Inc. in downtown Madison. He then decided to start his own local meat distribution company and worked successfully as HH Distribution “The Meat Man” until his retirement in 1998. In retirement Harold and Marie bought a winter home in McAllen, Texas. They loved their time in Texas and returning for the Wisconsin summers. Marie passed away in May of 2021.  


Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; sister, Joan Hanson; brother, Curtis Hanson; and stepdaughter, Debra Meyers.  


He is survived by his brothers, Roger Hanson and Mike Hanson; children, Richard (Suzanne) Hanson and Thomas (JoAn) Hanson of Sun Prairie Wis., Cathy (Richard) Schmitz of Cottage Grove, Wis., and Nancy (Mike) Lee of Kohler, Wis.; stepsons, Gary (Angie) Sieger of Stoughton, Wis., and Brian (Stephanie) Sieger of Pueblo West, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.


A memorial service will be held at ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 625 E. Netherwood St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.       


The family would like to thank the loving and comforting care provided by the staff at Azura Memory Care in Stoughton, nurses from Agrace HospiceCare and the St. John’s Lutheran Church Care Callers.
