Obituary

MADISON - L. Joan Schultz, age 29 and holding as Joan would say, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Nov. 18, in Waterloo, Wis., the daughter of Leslie and Eleanor (Huebner) Higgins.

Joan worked as a stenographer at the Wisconsin Alumni Association, where she met and married the love of her life, Kenneth Schultz, on Feb. 3. She left the WAA to raise her children and later was employed at American Family Insurance in the accounting department for over 20 years.

Joan enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards, especially euchre. She also enjoyed ceramics and cake baking and decorating. Joan was an avid Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and Milwaukee Bucks fan. She took great joy in watching replays of their games on TV and was thrilled to have attended the Ice Bowl. Joan loved going to Las Vegas with Kenneth semi-annually, where she would play the slots for hours and loved taking in the shows. Her favorite drinks were pina coladas and strawberry margaritas.

Joan loved hosting Hallmark movie nights on Saturday evenings with Cameron and Chandler. They always made sure to bring chocolate, vanilla or strawberry shakes from Culvers. She thoroughly enjoyed attending David and Lucas’ basketball and volleyball games. She also loved to throw her annual summer Hawaiian luau party for family and friends.

Joan was caring and loving to her children, grandchildren and especially her two great-granddaughters.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Vicki DuBois and Terry (Mark) Schultz-Krajco; son, Stephen Schultz; grandsons, David (Jessica) DuBois Jr. and Lucas DuBois; granddaughters, Cameron Krajco, Chandler Krajco, Hunter (Kirby) Brown and Lexi Schultz; and great-granddaughters, Mari DuBois and Lane Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Johnson Schultz; parents; son-in-law, David DuBois Sr.; sister, Betty; and brother, Carvor.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

The family wishes to thank SSM Cancer Center, especially Dr. Jacqueline Mullvain who helped Joan soar higher and longer than anyone could have imagined, Oakwood Village Rehab Staff who treated Joan with respect and dignity, Agrace HospiceCare who gave Joan the best care a hospice patient could receive, and Turville Bay Center and SSM Health, Polly Boynton, ANP-BC for their exceptional care. Dear Family of Joan—As a neighbor of Joan, she knew her to be quiet and we exchanged waves at our mailboxes. We’re sorry we did not know she passed and not able to express our condolences to you in person on her death. Sincere sympathies from us. Kris and Eric
