Obituary

Middleton - Dr. Edwin E. “Ned” Ferguson Jr., age 78, of Middleton, passed away on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023. He was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Alexandria, Vir., to Edwin and Alice (Jewell) Ferguson.

Ned received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and continued his education by attending medical school at George Washington University. He worked in a private practice in Waunakee, Wis., specializing in Internal Medicine. Later, Ned became part of the UW Clinics, eventually specializing in Preventive Cardiology and developed a budding interest in Functional Medicine. No matter where he was employed, he always played an active role in the education and training of several generations of new physicians. After retiring from actively practicing, he served as the medical director for Springtime Health and Wellness.

In the 2000s, Ned rekindled his love for playing music and released an album in 2008, ‘Project Ned.’ He was a major supporter of local music in Madison, loving local artists of all genres-you wouldn’t be surprised to see his face at any show around the area. Ned donated his time to getting younger generations into music through high school programs, notably, Girls Rock Camp.

In addition to music, Ned had a passion for model railroad trainsets and grew up with Lionel sets and never stopped loving the craft. He became a member of the NRMA (National Model Railroad Association) and would model his railroads after the Rocky Mountain Railroads such as the Denver and the Rio Grande. Notably, his model of the Decrepit Mountain Railroad was shown at the NMRA “Lake Junction” convention in Madison in 1997.

Edwin is survived by his son, Drew Ferguson; and sister, Katherine "Ann" Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Alice.

A memorial gathering will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023.

This breaks my heart!! 💔 Doc was a fellow Beatles aficionado who always had wonderful stories. His love of music in general and his kind, unassuming nature made him an easy friend to talk to. He'll be missed!!

I knew Ned from working at Biaggi's. He would come in almost daily and he made my day every single time I saw him along with the rest of the Biaggi's staff. If you asked the staff members who their favorite "regular" was, the majority of them would say Ned and if they didn't, it was because they didn't have the pleasure of meeting him. Ned was one of the kindest people I've met and I will miss him dearly.
