Obituary

MADISON - David Huttleston Sr. passed on Dec. 26, 2023, in Madison, Wis., at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Maryanne; and sons, David Jr. (Louise Latterell) and Christopher Scott; four grandchildren, Will, Ellie, Celine and Enzo; and his sister, Mary Alexander.


Dave put himself through Harpur College using paper route earnings, and graduate school in Math working as a farm hand. While teaching math in the Catskill Mountains, he fell in love with Maryanne, a fellow teacher. Together, they raised a family, managed a horse farm and started three businesses. As an actuary, Dave worked tirelessly to get fair benefits for public servants.


Dave loved playing knights, dolls, dragons and Legos with his sons and grandkids. He spread cheerful kindness everywhere he went. In lieu of flowers, please consider a simple act of kindness to others.

Rest well my friend and actuarial mentor. We shared a lot of good memories in the 25 years we knew each other, but one of my favorites was sharing the Monty Hall 3 door problem. We bet a dollar (4 times our normal bet on what the final trend would be each year) on the solution. To test the answer you simulated the game running thousands of iterations to determine the outcome. You paid off the dollar but reminded me that there was still a very slight chance I was wrong. I treasured that dollar and still hold it to this day. Rest well my friend.

I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. I always enjoyed working with David. We at Kelly & Haus always respected his honesty, good humor and intellect. His calm demeanor infused confidence in difficult and consequential situations. David was always available as a friend for good advice and kindness. His closeness to Maryanne was always evident. I too graduated from Harpur College and we had a good bond. I enjoyed travelling with him when we had good opportunities for uninterrupted talk. So sorry. I wish Maryanne and family all the best. When rhubarb season comes around, I always think of Dave when I run across his Rhubarb Bread recipe he shared with me during our time working at WEAIT. He was a fun guy and I have fond memories of him. My sincere condolences to his family. RIP Dave. Nita Lewis
