Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Robert J. “Bob” Slinde, Jr., age 75, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024, at his residence. He was born on Jan. 3, 1949, in Madison, Wis., the son of Robert J. and Bernadine Ella (Horton) Slinde.

Bob graduated from Monona Grove High School in 1967 and attended MATC.  He married Judith Marie (Hach) Slinde on June 27, 1970, at St. Bernard Church in Middleton. Bob worked as a lab technician for Hazelton Labs and later doing buildings and grounds maintenance for Mount Horeb Schools, retiring in 2001. He also proudly owned and operated Grouse Creek Shorthairs.

In his free time, Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing in the Madison Senior Softball League, and raising and training German Shorthair Pointers. He loved watching his grandchildren grow and compete in sporting events. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Sportsman’s Club, a guide at the Milford Hills Hunting Club, and he competed in numerous running road races.

Bob was a well-seasoned storyteller. He loved his family and their time spent together. Some of his best years involved summer camping trips to Black Hawk Lake and school months filled with the competitions of his grandchildren. Most of his wardrobe consisted of various youth / high school sports gear supporting his favorite players. He was in the stands as often as he could be and was always eager to point out ways the kids could improve their games.

Bob is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Robert “Bobby” (Ellen) Slinde of Mount Horeb; daughter, Mellisa “Missy” (Jason) Gordon of Barneveld; grandchildren, Josh (Ashley Wilhelm) Wolenec of Verona, Wyatt (Isabel Koehler) Slinde of Mount Horeb, and Grace, Emma and Eliza Gordon, all of Barneveld; great-grandson, Brantley Slinde; brothers, Chuck (Cheryl) Slinde of Baraboo and Randy (Julie) Slinde of Monona; and sister, Paula (Jeff) Kast of Cambridge.  He was preceded in death his parents; his sister, Jennifer Meseberg; brother, Hans Edwin Slinde; grandson, Matthew Patrick Slinde; and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Oh, Judy, Missy and Bobby and family... I am so, so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He looms so large in my memories of growing up in the neighborhood, I can't remember a moment when he wasn't there outside with some time to talk and shoot the breeze about anything and everything or for a quick game of hoops. Even the last few times I was home for mom and dad I'd make sure to keep an eye out so I could say hello. May the many memories you have bring you comfort and know that Bob had such an impact on so many of us. It's up to us to help tell those stories and keep things bright for him and for all of you. My condolences. Chris Keller

Dear Slinde family: A moment to let you know how delightful Bob was for me! It was wonderful for us to chat as often as we did about our many shared opinions and interests. I so looked forward on our morning walks hoping we would cross paths that day. As a short haired pointer owner I loved watching his success with Buddy and felt his affection for all of his dogs. I took delight in giving him some of my own tied trout flies and had to grin at his shock at admiring how well they were done. If nothing else I told him they were nice ornamentation for his hats. That too made him laugh. I shared his regret at the loss of his 4 who Orris bamboo fly rod, no small loss. We touched upon many topics, especially those of a political nature each of us finding an appreciative audience. I too will dearly miss him, will remember him super well and share your loss. Respectively,Ken Israel,MD.
