Obituary

MCFARLAND - Henry Mathew Montrey III, age 79, of McFarland, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on July 7, 1944, in Richmond, Va., the son of Henry Montrey Jr. and Grace (Adams) Montrey.

Henry graduated from Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis, Mo., in the class of 1962. He married Lynne York on June 11, 1966. After working his way through college in the ROTC program, Henry served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed a very successful career as an engineer and senior manager in the forest products industry, at both The Weyerhaeuser Company and the U.S. Forest Service. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2006.

Henry was a member of Full Gospel Church of Edgar Springs, Mo., and a proud alumnus of the Missouri School of Mines (now called Missouri S&T) in Rolla, Mo. He received master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin and MIT, and his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Wisconsin.

In addition to his five children and 13 grandchildren, Henry had many faithful friends from childhood, college and career who loved and deeply respected him. He was known by many to be a great leader, sincere and without guile. He excelled in multiple sports and was an avid jogger, hiker and cyclist. He loved dogs, his farm cats, computer technology, spicy food and being extraordinarily generous.

Henry is survived by his wife, Lynne; two sons, Brian Montrey and Scot Montrey; and two daughters, Shirly Montrey and Sheron Sinclair. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, David; and daughter, Wendy.

A memorial service is planned during a family reunion in June in Rolla, Mo.  Contact brianmontrey@gmail.com for details as they fall into place. Memorials may be gifted in Henry’s name to the Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center, 713 Maryland Avenue NE, Washington, DC 20002 (link below).

I met Hank and Lynn at a T-ball game for Scot/Brian more than 35 years ago. Our daughters, Wendy and Bethani, were playing together which easily struck up a conversation on adoption. I learned that Hank and Lynn were interested in adopting another child. I helped them adopt twin girls from Nicaragua. More recently, Hank would attend or annual Allergy Walk at Warner Park in Madison accompanied by his grandchildren. This was always followed by a Wisconsin fish fry and visit on our screened in porch. Hank was such a kind, smart, funny, and caring family man. It was an absolute privilege to call him my friend. I have absolutely no doubts where he is right now. Together again, the two Hanks. My heartfelt sympathy is extended to his entire family. May God bless you all with the assurance of heaven.
