Obituary

STOUGHTON - Hubert Francis “Bert” Mullooly Jr., died peacefully at Agrace Hospice Center (Fitchburg), on June 1, 2024. He was born on Aug. 7, 1947, in Galesburg, Ill., to Hubert F. Mullooly Sr. and Catherine (Hayes) Mullooly, the fifth of six children. He moved often as a child but called Madison, Wis., home where he attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Edgewood High School. He attended UW - Madison, UW - Milwaukee and graduated from UW - Green Bay.

Bert married Suzette DeClue, the love of his life, on Aug. 26, 1972, at St. Paul's chapel on the UW campus. They shared almost 52 years of marriage and traveled to many places both domestically and abroad. Their last trip, in 2022, was to Ireland to celebrate their 50th anniversary where they hosted family and friends.

Bert was an avid reader, Badgers fan, and had a broad taste in music and an interest in many subjects, a true renaissance man. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. Bert was also a member of the Stoughton Country Club for many years and while an average golfer, he did have two holes-in-one to his credit. He loved a good card game and more often than not was the winner. He relished time spent with friends and family and was known for his sense of humor and the delight he took in story telling a reflection of his Irish heritage.

Bert is survived by his wife, Suzette; brothers, William Mullooly (Wynell) of Redlands, Calif., and Thomas Mullooly (Kitty) of Hillsborough, Calif., sisters, Patricia Mullooly of San Carlos, Calif., and Jean Mullooly of Racine, Wis.; and sisters-in-law, Margo (Reed) DeClue Nelson of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., and Denise (Gary) DeClue Kotva of Seabrook Island, S.C. He was the favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Kathleen Mary Mullooly.

A special thank you to Dr. Kathryn Miller and all the staff at Agrace Hospice for their wonderful care of Bert.

Bert was a guy you liked the minute you met him - warm and friendly with a ready smile. His sister is my best friend so I had front row seats to all the fun, teasing and sibling rivalry shared by his baby sister. The world was a better and happier place with Bert in it. He will be greatly missed by many. Love to his family and friends, Gail Martinelli

Everyone enjoyed Bert Mullooly for different reasons. I was very privileged to know him (with a small group of others) as “Fun Uncle Bert.” I did not get to see him (and Aunt Suzette) as much as I would have liked, but I always looked forward to the next time I would see him. As a younger kid, he was always active with us. He was truly kind and generous with his time. And as we got older, he always instigated fun activities, no matter what age we were. I will most remember my amazing uncle for: Pepsi, UW Badgers, caramel corn, golf, movies, enjoying life with Suzette, jokes, sports, Pepsi, Irish heritage, humorous stories, full of knowledge, basketball, music, traveling, living life, & Pepsi. Rest in peace Uncle Bert. You made this world a much better place for so many. John Mullooly

We have known Bert for years—Ed went to Blessed Sacrament Grade school with Bert and we all went to Edgewood High School together. Bert was a kind, thoughtful and caring man. We are so sad that another of our classmates has passed. Please know, Suzette, that you are in our prayers. Julie & Ed Wrabetz.
