MADISON / COLUMBUS - Janet Kathleen Rayburn Meier went home to be with the Lord, her Savior, on Aug. 10, 2024, surrounded by her family.
A devoted wife, nurturing mother, and doting grandmother, Janet personified the essence of a Proverbs 31 woman. She tirelessly served others with unwavering faith, enduring spirit, and quiet strength. Her kindness, selfless service, and gentle heart left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Born on Jan. 9, 1933, in St. Paul, Minn., Janet spent her formative years in New Ulm, Minn., and later in St. Croix Falls. She graduated from St. Croix Falls High School in 1950 and honed her secretarial skills at Hamline University before moving to Madison, Wis. Her exceptional organizational abilities and shorthand expertise led her to a pivotal role in the fight against Brucellosis, a statewide dairy herd outbreak.
In 1955, Janet married Calvin H. Meier, their union spanning 45 years. They raised four children. Along the way they made stops in Madison, Verona, and eventually settled in Columbus, Wis. They owned a Chevrolet-Buick dealership, where Janet became an integral part of the office staff. While in Columbus she skillfully balanced the demands of home and business.
Janet was always busy and worked hard to make home a wonderful place. She was passionate about raising her kids and dedicated her life to family. Janet loved being outdoors and enjoyed daily brisk walks with her dogs and working in the yard. Her compassion for animals started as a little girl when she visited her aunt’s farm frequently. Janet always had a home filled with furry friends.
Janet and Calvin spent their retirement years as Winter Texans. She embraced new friendships, swimming, golfing and traveling around enjoying the many musical groups that Cal sang in. She enjoyed the warm winters in Texas and the many fun things that she did there, but she was always eager to get back home to family and her grandchildren.
A devout Christian, she and Calvin were lifelong members of a Bible-centered Madison church. Janet was a cherished friend, known for her loyalty and unwavering support. Her life was a testament to her faith. She will be deeply missed.
Janet is survived by her four children, Calvin (Judi) Meier of Tulsa, Okla., David (Debbie) Meier of Oregon, Wis., Dr. William (Dr. Heide) Meier of Middleton, and Becky (Jerry) Stoddard of Sun Prairie, 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Cynthia Wise of Bryon, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin; grandson, Logan; sister, Willa Lammer; and brother, Donald Rayburn.
The family would like to thank all the compassionate people of the Beehive Memory Care of Mount Horeb, and Agrace for all the love and extraordinary care they gave her.
A celebration of her life and burial will be held privately by her family.
