Obituary

What a long, strange trip it’s been…The east side of Madison has lost a legend.

MADISON - Lawrence W. “Larry” Koth, age 76, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024. He was born on May 1, 1948, in Milwaukee, the son of Louis and Betty (McCarthy) Koth.

Larry worked for Union Cab for over 30 years. He was known for dispatching the overnight shift, which gave him his nickname “Late Night Larry.” Through Union Cab he was fortunate to meet many wonderful lifelong friends.

Larry was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, and would listen to Bob Uecker for the Brewers play by play. He also enjoyed cheering on the Packers, Badgers and Bucks with his family. He truly loved music, seemingly always having the Grateful Dead on. He looked forward to spending several weekends in the summertime at local Madison music festivals where you could find him dancing stage right.

Larry loved to travel and take trips with his friends and family. He enjoyed camping with his close friends, including numerous road trips out west. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed looking for mushrooms, butterflies and birds. He was an all-star whistler and he loved sunshine, maps, puzzles and sunsets.

He was a proud Grandpaw and will be remembered as a man who always had a treat in his pocket for JJ, Edith and Louise.

Larry is survived by his children, Terri (Mike and his children, Lucas and Josie) Alm, Erin Koth, and Lauren Koth (Kyle McManners); granddaughter, Alyssa (Shane) Elms; brothers, Tom Koth and Ken (Patty) Koth; sister, Patti (Jim) Halbman; as well as his loving partner, Karen Anderson. He is also survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law; and lots of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy; and his parents, Louis and Betty.

We would like to thank all the friends, family; and neighbors near and far who paid a visit, supplied stories, food and hugs as we were able to care for him in his final days at home.

We hope everyone will come to celebrate with us at THE EAST SIDE CLUB, 3735 Monona Drive, Madison, from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024. Please wear tie-dye, Grateful Dead or Brewers gear per Larry’s request. We miss you Late Night and we will get by.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Goodman Community Center in Larry’s honor. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Larry, a good friend since high school. Played softball several years and saw lots of music in Madison with him. Watched a lot of sports at his house with Greatful Dead music, rather than announcers, ha. We could always find him up front at east side festivals that we were at. Mary Lou and I will miss Larry and Joy's presence. Peace
