MADISON - Marilyn E. (Fulker) Bahr, born April 7, 1938, passed into Heaven on Monday, December 16, 2024, at home, surrounded by her family. Marilyn was born in 1938 to the late Forrest Fulker and Mary Fulker.
She grew up in Groton, S.D., and graduated from Groton High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Wyn Bahr, in 1956. They lived in Davenport, Iowa, and then moved to the Madison area. They had two sons and two daughters. Marilyn struggled early in life, being born without a hip socket and needing to spend over a year in a hospital at the age of 1. However, she tried to never let it slow her down. She worked in childcare in Davenport, Iowa, for Oscar Mayer employees, and after moving to Wisconsin, she worked with the Madison School District at Kennedy School and Frank Allis, until she retired. She won two Crystal Apple Awards during her career. She was an active member of St. Dennis Catholic Church for almost 50 years and volunteered at the St. Dennis Festival for many of those years. She was also a Catechism teacher at St. Dennis and a faithful supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In her free time, she was an avid euchre player with her husband, Wyn, and enjoyed getting together on a monthly basis with their euchre group. She also enjoyed a bowling league with her husband and friends for many years. She participated for years in chair Yoga and her swimming class at the YMCA. Some of her favorite times were the many vacations to Groton, S.D., where they spent time visiting relatives and friends, camping in their travel trailer and cottage in Mobridge, S.D., and walleye fishing on the Missouri River with Eddy, Virginia and other relatives. She was a wonderful cook, and as the matriarch of the family, she took pride in hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners for many, many years. She enjoyed participating in a Christmas gift exchange each year with her close friends. She had a way of making everyone feel special. She cared deeply for her dogs and cats over the years, and she passed down her compassion for all animals to her children and grandchildren. Most of all, she cherished the time with her family, selflessly there whenever they needed her and always remembering birthdays and anniversaries. She was also a beloved sister to her siblings who could always count on her for love, support and advice. Marilyn was a warm, compassionate person and will be missed dearly by those who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Wyn; son, David (Pam) Bahr, and their three children, Josh, Justin and John; daughter, Pam (Steve) Barnes, and their three children, Tania Gross (children Charlie and Ellie), Candie (Nick) Drogsvold (children Cameron and Caden), and Nathan Barnes (Meghan McPhee) (Nathan’s children Tyler and Rachel); the two children of Anthony “Tony” Bahr, Devin (son Zayne), and Austin (daughter Rosie); daughter, Amy (Wade) Finke, and their two children, Kyle and Ryken; and her sisters, Virginia Nehls, Roberta Johnson, and Dorothy Reder.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Anthony “Tony” Bahr.
A special thank you to Amy from Agrace Aging at Home; her gentle, caring way paved the way for this transition; and Melissa from Hospice for all of her help, support and making sure we knew help was only a phone call away and that we were never alone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dennis Catholic Church, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 12 noon on Monday, December 30, 2024, with Father William Nolan presiding.
