FITCHBURG - Dr. Tribeni Narain Srivastava passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, at the age of 87, at home, with his daughters and wife holding his hand. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Kiran (Brent McCoy), Indira (Nicholas Hadley) and Priya (Benjamin Schnapp) and partner to Kumud Srivastava. He was also a proud grandfather to Aanya and Deven (Hadley), and Holden, Adelaide and Sydney (Schnapp).

Dr. Tribeni Narain Srivastava or “Sri,” as he was commonly referred to by his patients, was born in Allahabad, India on December 1, 1937, as one of five siblings. His father had a government position under British rule and his mother raised five children. Narain, from humble beginnings, decided early on to become a physician to serve others.

Due to financial constraints, his parents were unable to support his career goals. His eldest brother, Jagdish, who had a modest lifestyle and a growing family at the time, decided to pay for his medical tuition. Narain lived with the bare minimum while attending medical school and graduated from Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal, India. During his internship in Delhi, he applied for and secured a position at Flower Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He came to the United States in 1964, bearing his mother’s gifts of a bag of mangoes and his beloved Bhagavad Gita. After working for several years in Toledo, he decided to pursue a residency in Internal Medicine and later a fellowship in Cardiology.

Narain was always thankful for his eldest brother's favor and often sought chances to repay it. As a measure of his gratitude, Narain would send home a portion of each paycheck to help support his parents and extended family. Unable to say “no” to anyone who asked for help, he often started each phone call from his family members with “How are you doing? In his hometown of Allahabad, he established a merit scholarship at Allahabad University.

Additionally, each visit to his hometown included a visit to the Ganges River, where he donated food and money and provided meals for the homeless. He also supported a temple on the banks of the Ganges River, where his maternal grandfather had previously lived.

His devotion to his patients was unparalleled, often gifting medical supplies or personal items when they could not afford them. Unsurprisingly, he received many letters of gratitude from his patients over the years. Narain also wanted to give back to the county that provided him with the life he dreamed of. After becoming an American citizen in 1973, he served 12 years in the Army Reserves and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He traveled extensively, visiting all but one continent. He also loved reading and classical music, often spending his free time with a history book at the library or enjoying music.

He will be greatly missed; his commanding presence made you want to stand taller, do more, and be better. We appreciate having a father who consistently trusted and supported our decisions, loved us impartially, and valued what we most appreciate about ourselves.

In his honor, a private ceremony will be held in Madison, Wis., on January 26, 2025, and his ashes will be spread in the Ganges River in his beloved hometown of Allahabad, India.
