Obituary

STOUGHTON - Walter (Walt) M. Schnur, age 91, of Stoughton, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at UW Health University Hospital. He was born on September 10, 1933, in Stockbridge, WI, the son of Edwin and Mary (Mueller) Schnur.

Walter graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1951 and was the Class President. He married Yvonne Dohr, the love of his life, on November 10, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brillion, WI. In November 2024, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

Walter served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for four years. He was honorably discharged September 8, 1958.

Walter worked in a variety of positions for the Kohler Company. He retired in 1996 after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and enjoyed attending the annual summer Century Club picnics.

He had a deep commitment to his family. He spent his life supporting all of them in any way he could. Family gatherings brought him great joy.

One of his favorite past times was playing cards with friends and family. The caveat is that he would only play if there was money involved, even if it was only a nickel or a dime. Since he moved to Stoughton, he played Sheepshead three days a week at the Senior Center. He also enjoyed spending hours at the casinos playing slots. Although he took up the game of golf later in life, it was a game he loved to play.

Walter is survived by his wife, Yvonne; three children, Lori (Bob) Tremlett, Jeffrey (Shirley Puente) Schnur and Rick (Jane Ingles) Schnur; grandchildren, Scott Tremlett, Stephen (Lindsay) Tremlett, Stacy (Chase) Brieman, Donna Schnur, Melissa (Mitch) Erickson and Peter (Trinity Chacon) Schnur; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Carter Brieman, and Owen and Harper Tremlett; and brother, Gordon (Carole) Schnur. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marie Miller, Veronica (Schuette) Blank, Rosemary Hiebel and Dorothy Ann Funke; and brothers, Anthony Schnur and Lawrence Schnur.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at QUEEN OF APOSTLES PARISH AT ST. DENNIS CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 12 noon on Monday, June 16, 2025. A visitation will be held the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday.

The family wishes to thank the staff at UW University Hospital for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, https://www.adrc.wisc.edu/give. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Uncle Walter will truly be missed. Always enjoyed his loving, laid back attitude along with his cute smile. I loved Walter's many hats he wore, a man of style😊 I could always count on seeing Walter at every family event. A man that loved his wife through everything and loved his family very much. His devotion was beautiful to see. My dad loved his brother very much and will be deeply missed.

Cousin Walter was a very good person. My one remembrance was when my grandfather passed. They lived with us and grampa was in the hospital and grama was babysitting. When I came home from a dance the phone rang that grampa wasn't doing well so grama wanted to o see him. She took a cab because mom and dad were gone. When they got home they went directly to the hospital. When they all came bacl I was told grampa passed. Dad had one day left to work before his vacation started. When he contacted the boss to let him know about his dad he had trouble talking so Walter took the phone to report about grampa. I am so grateful for that.Walter was a very good caring person.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Walt’s passing. I had the privilege of knowing him for the past 13 years. I will treasure the memories we made, especially of his patience and help playing Sheepshead at family get togethers, our great cribbage games- many of which he won, and the fun we had gambling on penny slot machines. He was a special man that will be greatly missed.
