Obituary

MADISON - Mario Isaac Calderón passed away on January 4, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Mario immigrated to the USA in 1957, graduated from the University of Minnesota, and went on to a long career in education in the Beaver Dam Unified School District and Madison Public Schools.


Mario was known for his deep commitment to community and service, especially to immigrant families, for whom he helped navigate school and healthcare systems with compassion and respect. He lived to give back, leaving a lasting impact on thousands of students and families.


Mario is survived by his wife, Theresa; children, Jasmin, Orlando (Roberta), Yolanda, Angelina (Ben), Alejandra (Dan) and Alba (Matt); his brother, Luis; and many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Daniel and Jaime.


To honor Mario, a scholarship fund has been created with the Madison Public Schools Foundation (https://schoolsmakemadison.org/donate/funds/mario-and-theresa-calderon-scholarship-endowment-fund/) and a Celebration of Life will be held at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
