Obituary

GREEN BAY - Judith “Judy” Ann Fontaine (Effenberger) passed away on February 25, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 1, 1941, in Oconto, Wis., the daughter of Philip and Elaine (Noel) Effenberger. She and her sister Barbara resided with her mother at her Grandma Noel's boarding house while her dad, Philip, was in the Navy. Five years later they moved to Green Bay where her dad managed the Montgomery Ward sporting goods department store and her mother worked at Baums Department Store.

Judy graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1959 with honors. Her first job at the age of 15 was at Ben Franklin West Side Dime Store. She was briefly employed at Morley Murphy Co. until she became a flight attendant for North Central Airlines. She left the airline to get married to Gary Fontaine and had two wonderful children. They lived in Oshkosh for about five years and then moved to Green Bay to open Abbey Carpet, which they ran for about 20 years. During that time, she also worked at Prange’s Clinique Counter as a sales consultant. After her divorce, she went on to work for Gerondale’s Home Furniture as a sales consultant for 17 years and then was a sales consultant at Van Vreede’s for eight years. She retired at the age of 75.

Judy met the love of her life, Larry Fink, in 1997 at a singles dance. They spent almost 20 years together. They enjoyed cycling and biked on almost every trail in Wisconsin. He also encouraged her to become a boating safety instructor, and they spent time at the yacht club in Green Bay. He preceded her in death in 2017.

Judy loved the outdoors, especially walking and cycling the rail trails with friends and family. She was happiest when hanging out with family and friends. Her favorite pastimes included playing cards, going for walks, and exploring Door County. She never passed up the opportunity to go for an adventure or to have a margarita at Los Banditos or Margarita’s in Green Bay. You could always find her by following her infectious laugh or near a piece of chocolate or a scoop of ice cream. Sundays she could be found watching the Packer’s game and playing cards (NO PENNIES!)

Judy is survived by her two children, Lisa Gilbertsen (Tim) and Chris Fontaine (Imee); eight grandchildren, Melissa Feltz, Tyler Feltz, Clarissa Fontaine, Brayden Fontaine, Jardin Fontaine, Anastasia Fontaine, Paris Fontaine and Stephanie Gilbertsen; and three great-grandchildren, Aliana Feltz, Jackson Riley and Alice. Also, her sister, Barbara Boyer and husband Robert, and many special cousins, including Carol Monette (Randy). She was preceded in death by a grandson, Zachariah Fontaine; her parents, Philip and Elaine Effenberger; a dear cousin, Linda McCullick (Johnson); and the love of her life, Larry Fink.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at ROCK GARDEN, 1951 Bond St. Green Bay, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

I am so sorry for your loss. Judy was a special friend to my brother Larry and myself and my husband, Ken who passed away February 6. A few days ago I went to Joe Rouers and thought about how Judy and Larry would meet us there every Sunday night for several years. I’d not been to Joe’s in over a year. I miss going to the yacht club and meeting her there after Larry died. May she rest in peace. Marilyn Rabideau.
