MADISON - Edward E. Brost Jr., went to meet his maker on May 17, 2026.  He was born on December 6, 1932, the youngest child of Edward Brost Sr. and Mayme (Brovald) Brost in Cross Plains, Wis. Ed graduated from Verona High School in 1950, and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 - 1954.  He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1959.  Ed married Marlene Holdener on June 16, 1956. They had three children.

Ed learned to love the great outdoors from his father. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, hiking and gardening. He made many great friends through his outdoor sports activities. He was also especially active in the Dane County Conservation League which he participated in since the age of 12.  He also enjoyed all Badgers sports and the Green Bay Packers.

After college, Ed worked for Swift & Company in the agricultural division from 1959 - 1970.  He then started a commodities business in 1970 and retired from Brost Investments at the “tender” age of 75.

Ed married Jan Luethi on September 3, 1982. They had a great time together enjoying the outdoors, including fishing, hunting and long walks on the beaches of Florida, where they wintered for many years.

Ed is survived by his wife, Jan; and children, Diane Brown, Richard (Kathy) Brost and Kathleen (Todd) Kleisner. He is also survived by five granddaughters, three grandsons, five great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters, one great-great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Ed’s funeral service will be held at HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3702 County Highway AB, McFarland, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with Pastor David Kiel presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A celebration of Ed’s life will be at 1855 Saloon & Grill in Cottage Grove immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank or Agrace Hospice.

Ed’s family extends their gratitude to BrightStar Care and Agrace Hospice for their compassionate care of Ed in his final months. Special thanks go to friend and neighbor, Sherry, for her unwavering love, support and dedication to Ed and Jan.

One of my favorite, funniest memories of Dad is watching him completely soften up in his later years, especially when it came to his dogs. Growing up, he was incredibly strict about training his hunting dogs, and he had a hard rule that they all had to be female. Fast forward a few decades, and there he was—not only owning a male dog, but letting his pups sleep right inside the house instead of out in the kennel! We never let him live it down, constantly teasing him about how beautifully soft he’d gotten over the years.

My late husband (Greg Dahl) and I enjoyed meeting with Ed and his wife Jan. Ed always had wonderful stories of his youth when he hunted in Central Wisconsin. He had a wonderful memory for the days when upland and wetland wildlife species were more abundant. When Ed would visit us he would sometimes bring young vegetables or flowers for us to plant in our garden. He was very kind and always seemed to be smiling in a mischievous kind of way. His work with Dane County Conservation League was outstanding and assures the organization a good future. Thank you Ed.
