Dear Evelyn and Stephen, This is William "Bus" Jaco, I was one of Russ' first two students (1968). I just learned of his passing. and wanted to write a brief note to let you know that I have seen this news and offer you my deepest sympathy. I was very moved by the beautifully written obituary. It brought back some great memories of Russ and made me realize how quickly time can pass and how I wish that he and I would have shared more of that time. very best to both of you, Bus

Dear Evelyn and Stephen, As a graduate student in topology in Madison in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I learned a great deal from Russ. I greatly appreciated the clarity and simplicity of his thought and his dry sense of humor. He asked a question once which I was able to answer and which he magically turned into a publishable paper - my first. I regret now that I didn't make contact with him after his retirement on one of my occasional visits to Madison. (I've lived in Milwaukee since 1986 where I taught at UWM, retiring in 2016.)
