Obituary

Mary L. Alt, a dear and loving friend, “Sis,” aunt, and great-aunt, passed away peacefully at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg on September 4, 2026. She was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1938, in Madison, the daughter of Philip and Lucille (Steiner) Alt.

Mary lived a life filled with love, kindness and devotion to her co-workers, friends and especially to her extended Williston and Dennis families. She was known for her caring and compassionate nature and for always putting the needs of others before her own.

Mary’s Christian upbringing and education continued through her graduation from Edgewood High School in 1956. In June of that same year, she began her dedicated career with American Family Insurance. Through her hard work and commitment, Mary advanced to become manager of underwriting, commercial lines. During her career, she had the unique opportunity to see two members of her staff go on to become Presidents of the company. After more than 43 years of dedicated service, Mary retired in January 2000.

Throughout her life, Mary was a constant source of kindness, compassion, and loving support to her Alt, Williston and Dennis families. She especially enjoyed breakfast and lunch outings with her former co-workers and dear friends, where she treasured the time spent together and those friendships they had built over the years.

Mary will be remembered for her warm smile, positive spirit, generosity, and the lasting impact she made on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She cherished time spent with family, and many wonderful memories were created during game days and family meals gathered around Mary’s table.

Mary is survived by her brother-in-law, William Dennis; nephews, Lance (Liz) Williston, Dustin (Kristina) Williston, Bradley Dennis, Michael (Sarah Chadwick) Dennis and Andrew (Kara Gamlin) Dennis; great-niece, Emersen Dennis; and great-nephews, Aiden Dennis, Dylan Dennis and Braden Dennis. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Patricia (Leonard) Williston and Marcene Dennis; nephew, Daniel Dennis; and great-nephew, Noah Dennis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at QUEEN OF APOSTLES PARISH, ST. DENNIS CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, with Father Michael Resop presiding.  A private family burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday.  The family requests that you dress casually.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brooke’s Brigade, LLC or Agrace HospiceCare.  Also, the family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff at Encompass Heath Rehabilitation and Agrace HospiceCare for their loving care of Mary.

Mary’s loving presence will be deeply missed, but the many memories she created and the love she shared will remain in the hearts of her family and friends forever.

I was saddened to learn of Marys passing. I had the pleasure of working with her throughout her career, in both Personal and Commercial Lines. Mary was one of my trainers when I first started with American Family, and I have nothing but fond memories of our time working together.

I worked with and for Mary at my first full time job. She was a very valued mentor. I learned a lot from her and have thought of her often during my career. My deepest sympathies to her family. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
