Obituary

DEFOREST - Donald Francis Bernards, age 96, of DeForest, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. He was born on March 21, 1930, in Waunakee, the son of Walter and Barbara (Ripp) Bernards.

Don was united in marriage to Merle “Sis” Rabe on May 8, 1948, at St. Mary’s of the Lake in Westport. He worked as a supervisor for MG&E for 43 years, retiring in 1992.

Don was a hardworking man and took pride in earning everything he had. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved to bowl, earning many awards throughout the years and, along the way, making many wonderful friends. Bowling was not only something he enjoyed, but also a great way for Don to gather with others and have fun. He was often the life of the party and had a gift for making those around him feel welcome.

Don and Sis enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the casino, and they treasured the many fun trips they took with family. They spent their winters in Florida and Arizona, creating many happy memories along the way. A devoted card player, Don especially enjoyed playing Euchre. Above all, Don was someone others could count on. He was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed him and was a great source of support to his family and friends.

Donald is survived by his wife, Merle; sons, Jeff (Penny) Bernards and Gerry (Karen) Bernards; daughter-in-law, Debra Bernards; granddaughters, Jennifer Ray, Carrie Bernards and Ali Bernards; grandsons, Josh Bernards and Brent (Vicki) Bernards; great-grandchildren, Jordan (Jen) Ray, Tyler Ray and Jackson Bernards; and great-great-grandchild, Ryder Ray. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Duane Bernards; parents, Walter and Barbara; brother, Robert (Mary) Bernards; and sister, Ginny (Keith) Hohlstein.

A joint celebration of life for Donald and his son, Donald D. "Don" "Brillo" Bernards, who passed away on March 20, 2025, will be held at REX'S INNKEEPER, 301 N. Century Ave., Waunakee, From 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

He was a great Uncle!!! He always had a laugh & pull jokes on family & friends. Even way back when growing up, I lovingly remember he would tease his mother to tears until she cried. Great camping memories & always looking for the next victim to tease. He will be greatly missed until we meet again. enjoyed watching him, tease her until she laughed so hard that she cried! He will be greatly missed and I pray that the angels will welcome him with the open arms.
