Obituary
MOUNT HOREB - Lisa Marilyn (Winkers) Smelzer, age 57, passed away unexpectedly at her home on August 12, 2026.
Lisa was born on April 11, 1969, in Dodgeville, Wis., to Carol and Donald Winkers of Highland, Wis. She earned her associate degree from Cardinal Stritch and went on to build a career at TASC, where she served as a supervisor.
Lisa’s greatest joy in life was her family. She especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and was always there to cheer them on. She traveled far and wide to attend as many of their sporting events as she could, rarely missing an opportunity to be in the stands supporting the people she loved.
Lisa also had a special love for her dogs, traveling, gardening, and cooking for others. She showed her love through the many meals she prepared and the time and care she gave so freely to family and friends. Her generosity, warmth, and devotion to those around her will be deeply missed.
Lisa was the beloved wife of James “Jim” Smelzer. The two were high school sweethearts and shared 36 years of marriage together. She is also survived by her daughters, Morgan (Brandon) Halverson and Mackenzie (Brandon) Laufenberg; her beloved pups, Breck and Xander; and her grandchildren, Brooks, Braelynn, and Blayke Halverson, and Jayden, Halle, and Cameron Laufenberg, along with her cherished grandpups.
She is survived by her siblings, Karen (Jim) Scullion, Tim (Lori Salis) Winkers, and Brenda (Randy) Prestwood; sister-in-law, Tonna Winkers; brother-in-law, Kenneth Pospichal; sisters-in-law, Kim Mensch and Judy Smelzer; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, Carol and Donald Winkers; her mother- and father-in-law; her siblings, Pam Pospichal and Butch Winkers; and her brother-in-law, Rick Smelzer.
Information regarding visitation and services will be shared at a later date.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the members of the Mount Horeb Area Joint Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service for their care and assistance.
Lisa will be remembered for the love she had for her family, her unwavering support from the sidelines, her generous heart, and the countless ways she made the lives of those around her brighter. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
