Obituary

MADISON - Rick Bilkey, age 73, of Madison, Wis., passed away on August 10, 2026, at his home.  He was born on January 27, 1953, in Dodgeville, Wis., where he began a life that would be shaped by strong family ties, hard work, and a spirited love of the outdoors and community. He graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1971 and went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. On June 17, 1978, Rick was united in marriage to Mary Beth Nottestad, and together they shared a loving partnership that spanned nearly five decades.

Rick devoted much of his professional life to Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, where he served as Education Coordinator and Curator for 31 years before retiring in 2010. His work reflected his lifelong love of animals and his gift for sharing knowledge with others.

Outside of work, Rick lived life with energy and purpose. He had a deep love for animals, sports, and the many activities that kept him active throughout his life. He enjoyed playing team sports competitively and was especially proud of his involvement in the Home Talent baseball league, fast pitch softball teams, and, more recently, various senior teams.  An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished the time he spent outdoors and found great peace and joy in those pursuits.

Those who knew Rick will remember him as a man of strong character, a determined spirit, and a heart that was fullest when he was with his family.  His grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart.

Rick is survived by his wife, Mary Beth; daughters, Abigail (Matt Ziegler) Bilkey and Angela (Nickolas) Nabholz; grandchildren, Bella Ziegler, Lee Ziegler and Emmett Nabholz; brother, Barry (Janet) Bilkey; sister, Lori Sander; and brother-in-law, John Nottestad. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick “Fritz” and Beverly Yvonne Bilkey; and his brothers-in-law, Tom Sander and Mark Nottestad.

A private family burial will be held at Rockton Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Henry Vilas Zoo (https://henryvilaszoo.doubleknot.com/registration/donate.aspx?activitykey=3133731). Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

It’s hard to put into words how lucky I was to have a friend like Rick for over 40 years. The hunting, fishing and ballgames we shared are priceless memories. There is a void in my world moving forward but I will never forget him.

I volunteered with Rick at the Henry Villas Zoo for over 20 years – he hired me to be the summer school coordinator for a good portion of those years. He was a great boss and I’m very sorry to hear of his passing. He was fun to work with, knew a lot about Animals, and was a great teacher for giving information to all the school groups that came for programs as part of their science programming as well as for the fun of seeing Animals up close and personal. Even though he retired in 2010, we still have visitors that come and remember what a great job he did when they brought their children or their school groups to the zoo for a program.

Many special years playing ball with Rick that I will never forget. As a tough love catcher, he was instrumental in helping me learn the game of Fastpitch. I promise I will take the next 3-1 pitch I see in his honor.
