Obituary
COTTAGE GROVE - Irene Teniente, age 58, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at UW Hospital and Clinics, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 30, 1967, in Madras, Ore., she was the daughter of Joaquin and Irene (Diaz) Zamora.
Irene attended DeForest High School. The spring of 1987 proved life-changing while working at Burger King, where she met her future husband, Fernando.
She concluded her career with Kwik Trip, first in Sun Prairie and later in Cottage Grove, where she formed lasting friendships and often referred to her coworkers as her “second family.”
On December 31, 1988, Irene married Fernando Teniente, beginning a lasting partnership that spanned nearly 38 years.
Irene had a warm and welcoming spirit that made everyone feel at home. Affectionately known as “Pebbles” or “Selena,” she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel valued, accepted, and loved. She found great joy in baking, cooking, and opening her home to family and friends.
Irene enjoyed photography, Lifetime movies, Nicholas Sparks novels, collecting and writing recipes, and listening to all kinds of music - especially country and the music of Selena, to which she loved singing and dancing. Her creativity shone through her arts and crafts, and she was known for wrapping gifts with handmade ribbon creations that made every present feel special.
Irene is lovingly remembered by her husband, Fernando; her children, Rosalinda, Fernando Jr., and Santiago; and her seven cherished grandchildren: Thomas, Nyla, Fernando III, Arianna, Shaniyah, Zhaviah, and Zariah. She is also survived by her oldest brother, Fermin; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will continue to cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joaquin and Irene Zamora; and her brothers, Jose, Maurillo, and Joaquin Jr.
Please join us as we celebrate the life of Irene at WARM BELLY FARM, 4311 Vilas Hope Road, Cottage Grove, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.
