Obituary
MONTICELLO - Norman (Norm) A. Schmid, age 87, of Monticello, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, due to complications from a fall. He was born on April 2, 1939, on the family farm in Verona, the son of Gottfried Schmid and Evelyn (Schmid) Frederickson.
Norm began his career in 1966 at Fabritek, which later became Nicolet Instruments, as the company's sole machinist. Through his skill, leadership, and dedication, he advanced to become head of the Prototype Shop, leading a team of as many as seven machinists. He was especially proud to mentor two high school students through the company's Work Program, helping guide them toward successful careers in machining.
Over more than 40 years of service, until his retirement in 2007, Norm took great pride in watching ideas grow from the prototype stage into finished products. His craftsmanship, commitment to excellence, and passion for mentoring left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the many projects that benefited from his expertise.
Deeply involved with his son's Cub Scout Pack, he helped build and run the Pinewood Derby track at local & District level competitions. He dabbled in Taxidermy and endeavored to become an excellent Photographer, setting up a dark room to teach his daughter. His artistic gift stretched across several mediums. He particularly enjoyed sketching and creating paper-mâché sculptures.
He loved fishing, hunting, bowling, softball and golf. As members of Evansville Golf Club for many years, he and Coco enjoyed bumping into family and old friends on the course. He was always trying some new technique. He took up flying Remote Controlled Airplanes, that almost always came down in pieces and simply got re-glued & lived to fly again.
He loved his country life and wrenching on everything that needed to run. He took great pleasure in mowing his own Park. Gathering around the table for cards, dominoes, sharing his homemade wine with family and friends or heading to town for the best burger in Green Co. Life was a joy, full of laughter and love. He cherished his Grandchildren & Great-Grandchildren.
Norm is survived by his significant other, Claudia “CoCo” Sickinger; children, Susan (Ike) Schuster, Scott (Kim Snyder) Schmid and Weed (Nicole) Canfield; grandchildren, Jade (Cody) Becker, Trinity (Weston) Romuald, Bailey (fiancée, Cheyenne Eastham) Schmid, Benjamin Schmid and Nevada Canfield; great-grandchildren, Miyah, Makenzie and Ryker Becker, and Briggs, Stella and Quinn Romuald; twin brother, Marvin Schmid; siblings, Arlene Ace, Kenny (Judy) Schmid and Lorraine Frederickson; and other family members, Kevin (Nicole) Schuster, Kai Schuster, Schaynna Olund and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Harvey Frederickson; his children’s mother, Myra (Hildestad) Malas; brothers, Donny (Eve) Schmid and Gary Frederickson; sister-in-law, Nikki Schmid; and brother-in-law, Darrell Ace.
