Obituary
STOUGHTON - James G. Hanson, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. He was born on February 13, 1939, in Columbia County, the son of Glen and Marena Hanson of Portage.
When Jim was younger, he hunted a lot and worked on the farm. He joined the U.S. Army and served for five years during the Vietnam War. He got to go to France and Germany. He joined the American Legion on July 1, 1986, and he was a life member. Mary, his wife, got it for him as a Christmas gift. Jim married Mary Koebler on February 8, 1964, in Portage.
Jim worked at Madison Kipp for 39 years and farmed the homeplace and Portage. He volunteered for the Dane County Pork Providences, doing all kinds of things for them. He was often asked to speak at schools about his life.
After Mary passed away in 2013, Jim got involved with his church, Christ Lutheran, and helped them with many events. Jim and his friend, Jerry, did a lot of stuff together, cutting down trees and splitting wood. They went to a lot of baseball games. Jim and Jerry were always doing something together. Jim had a busy schedule, and you had to make an appointment to see him at times.
James is survived by his daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Dudman; son, Roger Hanson; two grandchildren, Kyle and Diane Hanson; his beloved cat, Peanut; and many relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 700 County Highway B, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
We will miss Jim dearly.
