Obituary

FITCHBURG- Kathryn B. Curio, age 79, of Fitchburg, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at her home. She was born on June 19, 1946, in Chicago, the daughter of Leopold and Helen Baumann. She was united in marriage to Ronald Curio in 1974 and they shared 52 years together.

Kathryn earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago in 1968, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Illinois Chicago. She began as a critical care nurse at the University of Chicago in 1968. She assisted Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in identifying the five stages of dying and grief. She was periodically escorted to work by a tank. She met her future husband, Ron, at Hoofers Club in Chicago. She was also a psych nurse at the VA helping Vietnam veterans integrate back into society.

Kathryn spent many years caring for her children at home. She was very dedicated to her family. She loved to spend time sailing with her husband, Ron.

Committed to lifelong learning, she further expanded her expertise through training at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Kathryn touched countless lives through her compassion and commitment to helping those struggling with addiction, mental health challenges and the lasting effects of trauma. Before Kathryn’s passing, she found joy in signing her granddaughter up for sailing classes at Hoofers.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Ron; and children, Gabrial (Angela) Curio and Elise Curio. She was preceded in death by her children, Sarah Curio and Ethan Curio; parents, Leopold and Helen Baumann; and half-sisters, Vivian Cottrel and Edith Paske.

I’m Pat’ Cunningham’s daughter. Pat was Kathryn’s aunt on her dad’s side. My mom loved Helen, Kathy’s mom. In any case, when I lived in Madison and had small children, Kathryn visited one day. As we sat on the deck, one of the kids wanted to fly their kite, but had knotted up their kite string. Days earlier I had frustratingly and unsuccessfully tried to untangle the knots. As we sat and talked, Kathy calmly and slowly untangled the string. She gave no indication of what she was doing and there was no sign of frustration as she wound and unwound the string. When she had it all sorted, she simply handed it back. I was in awe of her patience and serenity. I still am. I think of her every time I confront a tangled necklace or a mess of cords. I’m so very sorry for your loss, but I know my mom is glad for the company.
