Obituary

MONONA - Jerome J. “Jerry” Maly, age 86, of Monona, Wis., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at St. Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. Jerry was born on March 6, 1940, in Cross Plains, Wis., to Aloysius J. Maly and Mildred M. Schwab.

On July 2, 1960, Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Loretta J. Havey. Together, they shared a devoted and loving marriage built on faith, family, and service to others. They celebrated 65 years of marriage with a special celebration in 2025.

Among his many accomplishments, Jerry proudly served his country in the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 115th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Truax Field, Madison, Wis., from 1962 to 1968. His service included basic military and technical training at Lackland and Sheppard AFBs in Texas.

A faithful longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Monona, Jerry and Loretta served together as communion lay ministers and active members of their parish community for many years.

Jerry dedicated 43 years of service to Madison Gas & Electric, starting in meter reading and later working in cash accounting until his retirement in 2003. Following retirement, he continued giving back to his community by volunteering at MMSD’s Kennedy Elementary School in Madison for 14 years, where he became affectionately known as “Grandpa Jerry” to many students whose lives he touched with kindness, patience, and encouragement.

Jerry will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Loretta; his daughters, Lisa (Donald) Femrite and Kimberly (Juan) Romero; and his four cherished grandchildren, Alexandra Femrite (John Smith), Kyle (Braden) Femrite, Daniel and Samuel Romero; and his two great-grandchildren, Klyde and Emery Femrite. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins survive him.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Mildred Maly; his in-laws, Alfred and Evelyn Havey; his sister, Florence Guenterberg; his brother, Robert Maly; his brothers-in-law, Emery (Jim) Guenterberg and Lauren Havey; and his sisters-in-law, Marietta Havey, Penny Eifert, Marlene Spangler and Sharron Pickett.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of SSM Health at Home Hospice and the 5th-floor staff of St. Mary’s Hospital for the compassionate and exceptional care they provided Jerry during his final days.

Funeral arrangements will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., and a funeral service will follow. Entombment and Military Honors will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you choose a charity of your choice in honor of Jerome Maly. Jerry will be remembered for his strong faith, quiet generosity, dedication to family, and the warmth and kindness he shared with everyone who knew him.
