Obituary
MADISON - Philip Thomas O’Brien, a man of sharp wit, intellect, and deep devotion to his family, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in Boscobel, Wis., Philip was the son of Paul Stephen O’Brien and Mary Ann (Chlan) O’Brien. He was the second of eight children, growing up in a household that instilled in him a foundation of resilience and a curious mind.
A pivotal chapter of Philip’s life began when he joined the Peace Corps and was stationed in Southfield (St. Elizabeth), Jamaica. It was there that he met the love of his life, Merlyn. Their meeting sparked a 51-year marriage and a lifelong love affair with the country and people of Jamaica, a place that remained close to his heart forever.
Philip was a man who took great pride in his intellect. He often shared with confidence that he was known to be the smartest person to have ever lived in the State of Wisconsin. Beyond his intellectual pursuits, Philip was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.
Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Merlyn; his daughters, Nicola and Fredericka; his son-in-law, Norman Jr; his granddaughter, Natalya; and his grandson, Nikita. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Clare Hatlen; and a large extended family of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews who will miss his steady presence. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brothers, Lawrence and James; along with siblings, Paul J., John G., Thomas F., and Stephen J. O'Brien; as well as sisters, Ann Hollibush and Jean Ruegsegger.
Philip’s legacy lives on in the family he adored, the woods and waters he loved, and the legendary brilliance he shared with everyone.
