Obituary

FITCHBURG - Cynthia Mae Owens, age 76, of Fitchburg, Wis., passed away on May 6, 2026, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, after a battle with leukemia. She was born on August 27, 1949, to Richard and Ruth Kuiper at St Luke’s Hospital in Racine, Wis. She was baptized in the Racine Christian Reformed Church. She was the oldest child, followed by Marcia and Dennis.

In childhood one of her favorite pastimes was baseball. She joined her male cousins playing catch, hitting pitched balls, and pick-up games if they could round up enough friends to field a team. She later went on to play tennis, golf, and ski.

Cynthia attended Racine Christian School until 8th grade and then attended William Horlick High School, graduating in 1967. She attended Calvin College for two years and then the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for two years, graduating with a degree in accounting. While attending UW-Whitewater, she met her future husband, Michael Owens.

After establishing herself in Madison she became a member of Madison Christian Reformed Church. She and Mike were married there on Valentine’s Day in 1976 and remained lifelong members. That same year they bought their home in Fitchburg, where they would call home for the next 50 years.

Cyndi and Mike were blessed with two sons, Jason in 1981 and Kevin in 1984. Cyndi was a devoted mother and took great pleasure in caring for them as infants and toddlers and watching them grow into active teens and successful adults. They changed her life for the better and they felt that in the love and support she provided.

Cyndi started her career with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services right after college. Her position was a Certified Internal Auditor rising to the rank of Senior Auditor. She received several awards for her thorough analysis and reporting. She remained with the Department until her retirement in 2016.

As part of the Madison CRC Cyndi and Mike saw the church through the move to the Dutch Mill Road location and the subsequent reorganizations to Crossroads Church. Cyndi was involved in several church committees, treasurer for the legacy fund, and in the delivery of the audiovisual portion of the church services.

She and Mike were a part of ski patrol at Devil’s Head in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was a part of various softball teams, starting with Racine County teams, church leagues, and eventually an Oregon, Wis. city league. She was an accomplished racquetball player. She also played golf throughout most of her life, beginning in high school. She and Mike would enjoy many golfing vacations together well into retirement. One of their favorite locations was Scottsdale, Ariz., where they would meet up with friends. She was a part of the EWGA league and won several competitions within that organization.

Throughout her life she had a love for gardening, whether it be at home or church. She enjoyed trips with her friends from church to visit local gardens. She spent many years maintaining the church gardens and landscaping.

Cyndi is survived by her son, Jason Owens; son, Kevin Owens and fiancée Jessica Piencikowski; sister, Marcia (Ken) Brondyke; brother, Dennis Kuiper; and in-laws, Patricia Carpenter, Linda (Mike) Burke, and Neil Owens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike; parents, Richard and Ruth (Osinga) Kuiper; and in-laws, Glenn and Eileen (Foelske) Owens.

A funeral service will be held at CROSSROADS CHURCH, 3815 Dutch Mill Road, Madison, at 12 noon on Saturday, May 16, 2026, with a luncheon to follow. Burial will take place at Oak Hall Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to the teams at St. Mary’s Hospital and Agrace HospiceCare for their compassionate care and support over the past several months. Their kindness and dedication provided comfort to our family during this difficult time and we are deeply appreciative.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossroads Church, 3815 S. Dutch Mill Rd., Madison, WI 53718; Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711; or the Susan G. Komen Foundation (Cyndi was a breast cancer survivor). Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
