Obituary
BROOKLYN - Cheryl Lynn Brassington, age 77, of Brooklyn, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at UW Hospital and Clinics. She was born on August 4, 1948, in Madison, the daughter of Eugene and Celia (Remington) Eaton.
Cheryl graduated from Oregon High School in 1966. She married Bruce Brassington on March 25, 1988, in Madison. She worked as an assistant librarian for the City of Madison, retiring in 1999.
Horses were at the heart of Cheryl’s life, shaping many of her favorite adventures. Her passion led her on countless camping and trail-riding trips throughout Wisconsin and into the mountains of Wyoming and Montana, as well as to Canada. She and Bruce shared a deep love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, with memorable trips to Canada and Alaska. Cheryl was also a talented seamstress, creating clothing, gear, and even a small tent that the two of them used on their travels out west and in Canada. She also participated each year in the MS Walk with her friends.
Cheryl took great pride in her flower gardens and treasured time spent outdoors with her family. Together, they enjoyed cross-country skiing, often creating their own trails as well as downhill skiing and hiking on family camping trips. An avid reader, she built a large personal library and was rarely without a book. She also enjoyed rosemaling, spending many years painting and decorating a wide variety of items.
Cheryl’s grandchildren made her face light up with joy. She dearly loved her dogs, Gus and Annie, and delighted in taking them out on the trails each day in her golf cart.
A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis altered the path of Cheryl’s later years, making it difficult for her to pursue the outdoor adventures she once enjoyed. She met these challenges with quiet strength and remained deeply connected to the people and interests that mattered most to her.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bruce; daughter, Jessica (Travis) LaSchum; grandsons, Tyler LaSchum and Bryce LaSchum; sister, Kathy (Mark) Larson; and nieces, Gena (Steve) Somerfeld and Becky (Bennett) Starnes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Celia.
A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 12 noon on Monday, May 18, 2026. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.
The family extends a special thank you to Cheryl’s caregivers, Dawn Gunsolus and Deb Schiefelbein, for their years of friendship, compassion, and devoted care. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
