Obituary

SUN PRAIRIE - Terry Lee Auchtung, loving husband, father, and Opa, age 70, of Sun Prairie, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on July 31, 1955, in Corona, Calif., the son of Joyce and David Auchtung Sr.

Terry graduated from Marshall High School in Marshall, Wis., Class of 1973. He married his high school sweetheart, Cindy (Hart) Auchtung on September 15, 1973. They were joined in marriage at the Marshall Methodist Church. Together they raised their four children, whom he loved immensely. He was employed as a commercial driver for several years at Perry Printing Company in Waterloo, Wis. Prior to retirement, he also worked for Schoep’s Ice Cream, continuing his love for truck driving. Terry liked to stay active by playing softball, dart ball, tennis, and golf. He enjoyed the tennis court with his children and taking them to the local park. Terry also enjoyed deer hunting with his family as well as snowmobiling. Terry had a knack for fixing mechanical things. He enjoyed buying vehicles, making repairs, and reselling them. He retired in 2020 and spent much of his free time with Cindy, traveling, taking weekend trips, and just enjoying each other's company.

Terry genuinely loved connecting with others. He loved to go on motorcycle trips with his beloved wife, Cindy, and several of their friends. He attended many Wisconsin farm progress days with his dad and brothers. Terry always looked forward to attending art class with his daughter’s elementary students and traveling to his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a faithful, steady deacon at Grace Baptist Church in Madison. He loved the Lord, having the opportunity to spend time with church members, and encouraging the younger generations in the church community. He had the most giving spirit and helped whomever he could, whenever he could. Terry loved to share his humorous stories and see others laughing. Many will remember him for often saying he was “doing better than I deserve,” when asked how he was.

Terry is survived by his wife, Cindy (Hart) Auchtung; children, Tamara (Paul) Poppert, Jeramie (Colleen) Auchtung, Heather (Matthew) Peters and Tiffany (Josh) Howell; grandchildren, Savannah and Trinity Auchtung, Tanner and Madison Poppert, and Wyatt and Wilton Howell; siblings, David (Martha) Auchtung Jr., Julie (Jim) Zbigniewicz and Randy (Gerri) Auchtung; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sally and David Waddell, and Terri and Jeff Wilke; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and David Auchtung Sr.; sister, Sherrie Witt; in-laws, Charles and Helen Hart; brother-in-law, Paul Witt; and a niece, Dana Waddell.

A funeral service will be held at GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH, 1801 S. Thompson Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, with Pastor Dean Howell presiding. Burial will be held at MEDINA CEMETERY, Highway 19, Marshall, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
