Obituary

MADISON - Judith Anne “Judy” Metz, age 78, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at Oak Park Place Autumn Lane from complications due to heart and kidney disease. She was born on June 25, 1947, in Pittsburg, Kan., the daughter of Earl and Joan (Barnes) Miller.

Judy graduated from the LPN program at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1968. On May 23, 1970, she married Larry Metz. They moved from Kansas City to Madison, where they raised their two sons. She worked as an LPN at Karmenta Nursing Home on Madison's east side for 20 years and with the perennial bedding plants at Jung Garden Center on Madison's north side for 10 years. Judy volunteered her time as a lunch monitor at Gompers Elementary School when her youngest was a student there, helped coordinate free holiday meals and the food pantry at First United Methodist Church, and lent her support to the American Red Cross, Lakeview Public Library, the Daylily Society, and Olbrich Gardens.

Judy enjoyed being active. She loved reading, crafts, socializing and gardening, and over the years she had attained the rank of Master Gardener.

Judy is survived by her son, Alexander Metz. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry Ralph Metz; brother, Michael; and son, Christian Edward Metz.

A memorial service will be held at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Alexander - I am so sorry for you loss. Your mom and I were classmates at College High(class of ‘65). We enjoyed a lot of things together. Your grandma was a gracious hostess having us out to swim or to have slumber parties. Cherish your memories!

Alex, your mom was like a second mom to me growing up next door to you. I will always remember her kindness, Southern drawl (no matter how long she's lived in Wisconsin!), and positive outlook on life. Her flower beds were the best on Debra Lane, and she will always have a place in my heart and memory. Love to you at this very difficult time.

I appreciated Judy's diligent efforts and matter-of-fact mentoring in the Lakeview Library garden. She prioritized plantings that were beautiful, durable, and especially practical in that unusual space (a former parking lot). She put in the time needed to maintain a lovely and welcoming haven that the entire neighborhood could enjoy-- patio weeds feared her flamethrower. I hope that good memories of happy plantings will remain with all of Judy's family and friends. May the Bible's words at Luke 20:38 be of comfort.
