Rodney David Freeborg

MADISON - Rodney “Rod” David Freeborg, age 91, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Complete Care. He was born on September 2, 1934, in Spokane, Wash., the son of David and Gladys (Rudeen) Freeborg.

Rod married Alice Packer on June 7, 1986, in Marshfield, Wis.

Rod enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956, was stationed in Germany until 1959, and honorably discharged in 1962, as a Specialist-5 (Sergeant) rank. He received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Washington State University in 1967. He worked as a clinical psychologist and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, several public health care centers and finished his career with 20 years at the Marshfield Clinic.

Rod enjoyed working on cars, electronics, amateur radio (KC9HT call sign), and gardening.

He was quite proud of his Swedish heritage, and he extensively researched his family genealogy, even visiting Sweden for further knowledge.

Rodney is survived by his sons, John (Mary Jo) Freeborg and David (Maureen) Freeborg; former wife, Mae (Urban) Freeborg; and stepchildren, Rick (Julie) Packer, Brian Packer, Nancy (Packer) Hardman and Carol (Packer) Prindle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and David; brother, Roger Freeborg; sister, Carolyn (Freeborg) Krupke; wife, Alice Packer Freeborg; stepsons, Dan Packer and Mike Packer.
