Douglas G McGrath

MADISON - Douglas "Doug" McGrath passed away at home on Friday, March 27, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born in Madison, to Catherine and Richard McGrath, and raised his family in Arizona before returning to Madison.

Doug was a voracious reader, deep thinker, problem solver, and willing tester of his sister's baking experiments. His time in the Boy Scouts was one of adventure from winter camping to klondike derby, and bead working, with the Order of the Arrow, to name a few. He played rugby, ran cross country, enjoyed time at Uncle John's farm, and was chosen to participate in the Youth Conservation Corps while in high school.

Doug joined the military, starting in the Field Artillery, progressing to the Paratroopers, and Army Rangers. "Rangers Lead the Way." He earned multiple commendations along the way.

He earned a bachelor's degree, was married, and blessed with three children. While working and raising his family, Doug earned an MBA that, combined with his teamwork and leadership skills, enabled him to assume the role of Financial Executive.

Doug was a loving Dad: organizing the family holiday get togethers, taking the family on weekend camping and hiking outings (leading the coveted family Christmas hike), making breakfast on the weekend, grilling, and pool time. He participated in Boy Scout camping events with Michael and taught him how to maintain a vehicle. Doug ensured his kids were prepared for college, helping them select their courses and their first cars.

A great blessing in his life was to be called Grandpa by three wonderful grandchildren. He thought the world of each of them and loved them deeply.

Doug's other interests included Tae Kwon Do, classical music and opera, cars, working on home projects, tending the roses, attending Ranger get-togethers, and studying family history.

He was always available to talk and enjoyed being presented with a problem when another needed help finding guidance or a solution.

Doug is survived by his father, Dick; siblings, Mary, Lucy (Michael), and Dan; children, Elise (Dan), Michael (Ines), and Jennifer (Andrew); and grandchildren, Cora, Waylon, and Philip. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine.

Doug and Mary would like to acknowledge and express our deep gratitude to the many people, who through their caring and many kindnesses made Doug's health challenges easier to bear. Doug’s number one supporter, his Dad who visited every day. Our nephew, who enjoyed spending time, talking, cooking, sharing meals, and caring for Doug. You formed a deep and lasting print on Doug's heart. The VA care team - the tenacious MDs, Nursing staff, specialty clinics, social workers, and therapists that provided support products. To his dental staff, who made his visits more joyful than dreaded.

In addition, we would like to thank the home caregivers, the "church ladies," our wonderful neighbors (giving a hand up), and Doug's best friends.

There are too many individuals to thank, but we know who was here, and we are grateful. You helped create a loving supportive community for Doug.

Well Done my Brother Well Done!

A Mass of Christian Burial for Doug will be held at QUEEN OF APOSTLES PARISH, ST. DENNIS CHURCH, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, with Father Michael Tarigopula presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Saturday.
