Obituary
March 27, 2026 - It is with unimaginable sadness that we must announce the passing of Jody Whelan Singh after a five-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Jody was born in Madison to Dick and Janet Whelan on February 23, 1954.
Her hobbies over the years included SCUBA diving, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She ran a website for crochet lovers and was known as the Potholder Lady. She also enjoyed attending sign slam trivia nights.
Jody had many careers, including a radio DJ gig, working at a television studio, and a stint in the U.S. Army, where she met her husband, Dharma. She trained at Fort Gordon, GA, after which she spent three years serving in Germany, where she was joined by her husband. The most notable of her jobs was as a bus driver for Oakwood Village. She loved driving the residents to various outings such as concerts and farmers markets.
Jody was preceded in death by her father, Richard Whelan. She is succeeded by her mother, Janet Whelan; her husband, Dharma Singh; two sisters, Jenny (Mike) McDiarmid and Becky (Tom) Streich; and two children, Sam and Zach.
Thank you to the staff and residents at Oakwood, the staff at the UW hospitals and clinics, and the staff at Agrace HospiceCare for their care, compassion, and friendship.
A celebration of life will be held in the Crossings at OAKWOOD VILLAGE EAST PRAIRIE RIDGE CAMPUS, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, and is open to the public.
