Obituary

MADISON - Roger L. Popowich, age 80, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on February 14, 1946, in Ladysmith, Wis., the son of John Popowich and Sarah (Finley) Popowich.

Roger served in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1967 in Vietnam. During his time, he also received his GED in 1966. Roger was in the State Patrol for two years following his military service. He went on to work for Gardner Baking Company as a semi driver and union steward.

Roger loved fishing, and he enjoyed dancing to country music. He would take motorcycle trips with his friends from Gardner's, and he was always out talking with his neighbors. He spent a lot of time outside doing yard work, driving his John Deere to mow the lawn and plow snow to help take care of his and the neighbors' yards.

Roger is survived by his wife, Mikki; children, Brandi, Jeri (Arnie), Jim, Mike (Tiff) and Kris (Cindy); siblings, Gloria, Roberta, Greg and Lisa; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Jerry Dolfen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah and John; siblings, Gail, Jene, Roxie, Rosie, Russell, Jackie and Dorothy; and daughter, Anita.

Per Roger’s request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

Instead of donations to a charity, Roger would be very happy if you go out fishing or treat yourselves to a fish fry in his memory.

Special thanks to all the staff at VA Hospital and Clinics and Infusion Center, and to the cafeteria staff who made the best biscuits and gravy before his treatments. Also, to the staff at UW Hospital and Madison Police and Fire for the special care and treatment we all received on his last day.

Dad was the only man that I know of that took in a woman that had three children and treated those children as if they were his own. After Dad's divorce with our mother he never forgot us. Dad would always pick us up and keep us for the weekend for years. He never had to stay in touch with us,but he did.. He was the most amazing man that I could have ever met. I'll miss you til my time is over. To the best man in the world "My Dad"

Hi Mikki.... I absolutely adored Roger, you and your family and friends. I guess I did not realize he had been sick. I am so very sorry. I'm sending love, hugs and prayers to you. From one "trashy woman" to you my friend. Love always, Kristi
