Obituary
MIDDLETON - Elaine Schultz, 87, of Middleton, embraced a peaceful journey home on Monday, March 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy filled with joy, kindness, and adventure. Born on February 5, 1939, in Two Rivers, Wis., to Fern and Webster Krueger, Elaine’s life was a vibrant tapestry of learning, service, travel, and love.
Elaine’s adventurous spirit began in childhood as she traveled the country with her parents in their cherished Airstream trailer, exploring national parks and discovering the natural beauty she would enjoy throughout her life. She graduated from Washington High School in Two Rivers, where she was a proud member of the synchronized swimming team, and later earned her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Elaine devoted much of her heart to helping others. As the Director of the Middleton Crisis Intervention Program, she guided families through some of their most challenging moments with compassion, strength, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of community. The program’s volunteer-driven model reflected Elaine’s own outlook: neighbors supporting neighbors, ensuring that children in crisis could remain close to their schools, friends, and familiar routines. Her work touched countless lives, offering comfort and stability to families facing hospitalization, teen-parent struggles, abuse, substance issues, and truancy.
Elaine brought that same enthusiasm to her role as a tour guide for Bus-Abouts, planning trips for seniors that included sporting events, theater outings, and explorations both near and far. She had an extraordinary ability to turn any trip into something magical. A lover of wildlife, she especially treasured a journey to the Columbia Icefield in Canada where she saw polar bears, which quickly became her favorite animal. Her travels also took her to Alaska, Spain, and South America, fueling her sense of wonder at every turn.
Elaine married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Schultz, on August 18, 1962. Together, they built a joyful life rooted in shared curiosity, camping trips, and fishing adventures with their sons, John and Dan. Elaine’s heart was expansive; she cared deeply for people of all ages and backgrounds. As a social worker in her early years, she fiercely protected and supported teens. She also formed a lifelong friendship with Merten, a gentleman with a hearing disability, welcoming him fully into her family’s life and ensuring he had every opportunity to experience the world around him.
Elaine lived her values through service as a member of Eastern Star, sharing her time and talents, including playing the organ at meetings for many years. At home, she found deep joy in the simple pleasure of sitting on her deck, delighting in the squirrels and birds she faithfully fed-small reminders of the joy she found in nature and everyday moments.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Fern and Webster; her husband, Robert; and her sons, Dan and John. She is survived by her beloved grandson, Dan, who carries forward her humor, warmth, and adventurous spirit.
Elaine’s life was a celebration of kindness, community, and joyful exploration. Her bright spirit will be remembered with love by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of life will be held at THE COURTYARD AT FITCHBURG, 5669 Wilshire Drive, Fitchburg, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
