Obituary

OREGON - William D. Maher, age 92, of Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at home. He was born on June 19, 1933, in Madison, the son of Francis and Erma (Scott) Maher.

Bill graduated from Oregon High School. He married Nahldean K. (Christensen) Maher on August 27, 1960, in St. John’s Lutheran Church. Bill served in the U.S. Army from June 1956 to March 1958. He was stationed in Greenland and received the Good Conduct Medal.

Bill was a lifelong farmer. He loved the land and farming. Attending fairs and showing animals was one of his favorite ways to support his children and grandsons. His appreciation of the West was evident through his love of old TV Westerns like Gunsmoke and Yellowstone. Bill and Nahldean enjoyed traveling out West to Wyoming, Montana and to Las Vegas to gamble and see the sites. Snowmobiling, eating ice cream and reading books written by Jeff Nania brought him much joy. Bill loved his Australian Shepherds, currently Ginger, and his lab, Abby. He enjoyed visiting friends and going to Miller’s Supermarket on a Wednesday and having coffee with the guys at Burger King.

Bill is survived by his two daughters, Pat (Tim) Saunders and Karen Maher; son, Kurt Maher; three grandsons, Sebastian (Emma) Maher, Jake Solberg and Willie Solberg; brother, Ralph Maher; sister-in-law, Marge Christensen; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife, Nahldean Maher; parents, Francis and Erma Maher; sister, Caryl Farrell; and brother, Eugene Maher.

I remember going over to Bill's house, we sat outside on the picnic table. There was this gorgeous hawk on the fence. He turned to us and he only had one eye. Bill said he came by quite often
