Obituary

MADISON - Sun Im Panian, age 70, of Madison, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on July 11, 1955, in Seoul, South Korea, the daughter of Yong Hyon Cho and Kap Tok Song.

Sun Im met Greg Panian while he was stationed at Camp Stanley in Uijeongbu, South Korea, and they were united in marriage on July 13, 1987. She traveled the world with her husband throughout his military career prior to moving to Madison in 2007.

Sun Im learned the art of tailoring from her father in South Korea, a skill she used to create beautiful clothing with great care and pride. She took pride in maintaining a warm, welcoming home and loved to share her delicious culinary creations with friends and family. Sun Im cherished the time she spent with her siblings, nieces and nephews and her best friend, Ju (Queen) Ellis.

Sun Im is survived by husband, Greg Panian; sister, Kyong Nyo Jensen; and 4 other siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Yong Hyon Cho and Kap Tok Song; a brother and a sister.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Duluth.

I’ll miss 이모 할머니 more than many know… she was there for some of the biggest moments of my life. She was always there, supplying some of the biggest support to my family. One of the many, but fond memories I have with 선임 할머니 was the night she was cooking for everyone and we had some of her delicious egg rolls. To anyone who hasn’t tasted her cooking, had missed out- and to all that have, know exactly what I’m talking about. Although she was a woman of few words (in English), she still provided such tranquility and light to our home. I’ll miss walking past the guest bedroom of my childhood home, seeing her watch some k-dramas, enjoying a relaxing evening with a few of her laughs echoing the halls, and sitting in and watching them with her occasionally (with no clue what was being said since there was no subtitles), but just enjoying being around her. Your laugh, smile, hugs, support, cooking, and your peaceful presence will be missed immensely. I love you 할머니.
