Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Joyce Marie Wall, age 74, of Mount Horeb, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. She was born on February 5, 1952, in Marshfield, Wis., the daughter of Wilferd and Auralia (Wetzel) Atcherson. Joyce grew up on a dairy farm in Unity, Wis., alongside her sisters, June, Jan and Alice. Her mother instilled in her a deep belief in education as a path to opportunity, while her father taught her practical skills - from auto mechanics to building and repairing almost anything. Those early lessons shaped Joyce’s independence, resilience, and lifelong curiosity.

Joyce began working as a car hop at A&W and a lifeguard in high school, developing a strong appreciation for hard work and for the dignity of every job. Joyce earned her Bachelor of Science degree in teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire after completing studies in Medford. She later completed her master’s degree at UW-Stevens Point.

Joyce began her teaching career in Neillsville, later teaching in Appleton, New Jersey, and in the Wisconsin Rapids School District. She devoted the majority of her teaching career to the Mount Horeb School District, where she enjoyed educating fourth and fifth graders. She taught in Mount Horeb for 27 years. She had an extraordinary gift as an educator. Joyce believed in every child, especially those who struggled. She motivated and encouraged students of all abilities, helping them discover their strengths and reach their potential. She welcomed families into the educational process and often drew on the wider community to support her students. Her dedication, creativity, and steady encouragement left a lasting impact on countless children and families.

During her years in Wisconsin Rapids, Joyce took flight lessons and spent a memorable summer in Alaska - an experience that reflected her adventurous spirit and love of exploration.

Joyce met her future husband, Phil, in a characteristically unforgettable way. Responding to a newspaper advertisement Phil placed to start a bicycle club, she arrived at their first meeting in high heels, wearing a bright red hat, and introduced herself with playful confidence. What began as a shared interest soon grew into a deep partnership filled with laughter, energy, and devotion. Together they built a life rich with adventure: bicycling, sailing, windsurfing, camping, skiing, boating, entertaining friends, attending quilting gatherings, and embracing every opportunity to celebrate life.

Joyce brought warmth and light wherever she went. She had a remarkable way of making others feel seen and valued, often reminding people that they were beautiful because she genuinely saw the beauty in them.

In retirement, Joyce remained active and engaged. Mornings often began before dawn, enjoying the sunrise together before she set off on her daily bike rides along the Military Ridge Trail, where she formed friendships with fellow riders and walkers. She continued to substitute teach whenever local schools needed her, always eager to help.

Joyce’s love of travel led her to work for Delta Airlines, taking advantage of travel opportunities to visit family and explore new places. She later worked as a medical escort, accompanying patients internationally and traveling throughout the world. Together, Joyce and Phil enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean, as well as river and Mediterranean voyages - memories they treasured deeply.

Above all, Joyce loved her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Phil Wall; her daughter, Brittany (Dean) Sanders; her son, Brennan (Michelle) Wall; her stepdaughter, Tracey (Conrad) Wall; her sisters, June (Melvin) Kloehn, Jan (Mike) Oestreich and Alice (Rob) Kellett. She will be remembered for her boundless energy, generous spirit, and the joy she brought into the lives of all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the start of the service on Saturday.

Mrs. Wall made learning fun. To this day I still remember reading the book "The Cay." Actually, bought the book for my kiddo. She made reading fun and I have fond memories of her class. I can't remember all of my teachers but I remember her going above and beyond for me (comprehensive reading). My thoughts and prayers go to the family, may you find comfort in time.

I am saddened to learn of Joyce's passing. She was a delightful soul with a zest for life and adventure. She touched the hearts of many children throughout her teaching career as she also related to many adults with her many positive interactions . Joyce had a warm heart and was deeply loved by her family. I wish them all comfort knowing Joyce is at peace now and smiling as she watches carefully over them. Sincerely, Roseann Murphy

Our friendship started when Joyce worked at Delta Airlines. I had heard such nice things about her already; she was the favorite of many students (apparently she didn't give homework) and it was great to have the opportunity to get acquainted with her. She became a good friend quickly and we shared travel stories and talked about God and faith. She also loved talking about her family. She was truly one of the sweetest friends ever.
