Obituary

FITCHBURG, WI - Vicki J. Giese, 74, of Fitchburg, WI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Meriter Hospital, surrounded by her devoted daughters, after a brief illness.

Born on July 2, 1951, to John and Louise Yonts, Vicki grew up with a creative spirit and a kind heart that would define her entire life. A proud graduate of Beloit Memorial High School’s Class of 1969, she met the love of her life, Randall Giese, and married him on October 4 of that same year. Together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. Randall preceded her in death exactly 11 years earlier - a reflection of the deep bond they shared.

Vicki was an artist in every sense of the word - an avid quilter, painter, gardener, chef, basket maker, clarinet player, and bird watcher. When she wanted to improve her painting skills, she took classes at the local college and learned from Bob Ross and other painting videos. When she couldn’t find a basket-making class after moving, she simply created one and began teaching others. Music was another of Vicki’s great joys. She played her clarinet in multiple community bands and loved making friends and playing concerts. Vicki possessed a remarkable sense of humor and a quick wit. She had a knack for clever observations and playful quips that could brighten any room.

Vicki had a lifelong love of animals, especially cats, and shared that compassion with her children and grandchildren. Her home was always brighter for the pets she welcomed and cared for over the years.

Above all, Vicki’s greatest pride and deepest joy were her family - especially her beloved granddaughters. They were the center of her world. She cherished teaching them to sew, quilt, and paint, passing along not just skills but her love of creating. She encouraged their musical interests with thoughtful gifts of instruments. Game nights were treasured times, with Quiddler being a particular favorite. She created memories that will live on in our hearts forever.

Vicki is lovingly survived by her daughters, Karen Kollath and Christina (David) Blakley; granddaughters, Madelyn Blakley, Maribel Blakley and Halle Kollath; sister, Judith Withee; sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Ernst) Kopecky and Linda Bordo; brother-in-law, Larry Giese; many nieces and nephews; lifelong best friends, Robert and Diana Rowland; and friend, Jeff Fluck. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randall; parents; mother-in-law, Phyllis Giese; father-in-law, Ardath Giese; brothers-in-law, Scott Giese, Lyall Withee and Vern Bordo; and sister-in-law, Sharon Giese.

A celebration of Vicki’s life will be held in Wisconsin at a later date. In honor of her deep love for animals, memorial donations may be made to the Dane County Humane Society or to a charity of your choice. Those wishing to share memories or photos are invited to visit www.gundersonfh.com.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Meriter Hospital for their compassionate care.

Vicki’s creativity, humor, generosity, and unwavering love for her family will remain woven into the lives of all who knew her - a lasting legacy of warmth, color, and joy.

I went to Lincoln Jr High with Vicki in Band. Such a great person. Connected again on FB after close to 50 years. She never met them but loved my cats and thought my granddaughter were just as great as I do. Going to miss her fun quips and encouragements. Condolences to the family.

I was so very sorry to read that Vicki had passed. I was her (and Randy’s) cat sitter when she lived in Monroe. She even made me a quilt with my own kitties on it. She was special. My heart goes out to her friends and family. Heaven has received another angel.

Vicky lived next to me when I was little. She is the first babysitter I remember. As an adult we reconnected in Facebook and I was able to see her beautiful paintings. So sorry to see that she passed. My condolences to her family

To my mother-in-law, Vicki: You lived quietly, never asking for praise, yet your selfless acts spoke volumes. You gave me the greatest gift of all—your daughter—and I will remain eternally grateful to you for that. It's surreal to look back on you pulling up to my drive-thru window multiple times a week all those years ago. There I was, a total goofball teller just trying to get a rise out of my customers, and there you were—the serious “all-business” type who wasn't about to let some 21-year-old punk get a laugh out of you that easily! Somehow, between those quick transactions, you saw something in me that made you tell your daughter I was worth a look. I’m forever in your debt for playing matchmaker and bringing us together. This wasn't how your story was meant to unfold, but I am grateful for the many years that we did have. Chris and I carried a dream that one day our home would truly be yours, too. We searched so hard for a house with a main-floor suite, viewing it not just as a space, but as a promise—a sanctuary we kept ready for you should you ever have needed it. It was meant to be your place of peace, an assurance that you would always have a soft place to land with us. We understand that life’s path is often out of our hands, but losing you has left a void in our lives that we simply weren't ready for. It just wasn't supposed to end this way, and we miss you every day. To the woman who was a mother to me in every way that matters: thank you for thirty-plus years of nurturing my spirit and treating me as your own son. The bond we shared was rare, built on a foundation of wisdom and laughter, and you will always hold a special place in my heart. There was nothing I wouldn't have done for you, just as there was no limit to your unconditional love and kindness toward me. You weren't just family; you were one of my greatest friends. Thank you. I love you. You are deeply missed and lovingly remembered for your warmth, your quiet grace, your unique laugh (which was truly unforgettable!), and the incredible way you changed our lives for the better. As I reflect on the influence you have had since coming into my life, I realize that your kindness and generosity made me feel like family from day one. Each of those seemingly small moments was far more powerful than either of us could have known. From the very beginning, when Chris and I started dating, I was totally accepted. You made me feel like I truly belonged. In fact, I honestly don’t remember ever going through an awkward transition from being a stranger to being your son-in-law. You welcomed me from the very first day you invited me into your home. You were so much more than a mother-in-law; you were an incomparable friend and confidante. I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate for our football rituals, where we would regularly try to tackle a mountain of pizza or the occasional massive pile of nachos! Good times, for sure, and we would always top it off with The Three Stooges. You certainly loved to laugh, and you enjoyed seeing others do the same! Your presence was a gift to our family, leaving us with memories we will cherish forever. From holiday gatherings to our weekly dinners, to simple everyday moments—that gentle spirit of yours infused our lives with joy and meaning. So you see, Vicki, you were not just my mother-in-law; you were a second mom that I never knew I needed—someone I could turn to, laugh with, and learn from. I feel lucky to have had that kind of bond, and even luckier to be able to honor you for being the beautiful and special person that you were. Thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms, for the countless ways you showed your love, and for the legacy of kindness you’ve left behind. Your example of understanding and acceptance will continue to live on through all of us who were lucky enough to be in your life. Rest in peace, dear mother-in-law. Your impact on our lives is immeasurable, and your memory will forever be woven into the fabric of our family. I love you, and I will miss you always! — Sonny Boy
