Obituary

LODI - Philip G. Cowling, age 83, of Poynette, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the VA Hospital. He was born on February 9, 1942, in Madison, the son of Merwin and Genevieve (O’Neil) Cowling.

Philip lived his life with a full heart. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a man who never hesitated to show up for the people he loved. He married Joanne on October 10, 1964, in Mazomanie, WI, and together they built a life grounded in laughter, partnership, and deep affection. Their daughter was the light of their lives. Joanne’s passing in 2002 left a space in Philip’s heart that he carried tenderly, honoring her memory in the way he continued to love and support their daughter.

Life, however, had more love in store for him. As a widower, Philip was blessed to find companionship again when he met his current wife, Joyce Prosa-Cowling. They were married on September 17, 2005, in Mazomanie, WI, and Philip embraced not only Joyce but her children as well. He welcomed them with the same warmth and generosity he offered everyone. His kindness was never loud or showy - it was steady, dependable, and deeply felt. His smile could soften any room, and his presence made people feel safe, seen, and valued.

Philip served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he completed an associate’s degree from MATC and built a long, respected career as a diesel mechanic. He had a gift for understanding how things worked - engines, machines, and people alike. If something was broken, Philip could fix it. If someone was struggling, he could lift them up. He approached every challenge with grit, humor, and a “pedal to the metal” spirit that defined him.

Faith and community were central to his life. Philip was active in Marriage Encounter through St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Mazomanie and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lodi - work that reflected his belief in love, communication, and commitment. Philip was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7811 and the American Legion in Mazomanie, where he formed friendships that lasted decades.

Philip is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Christina (Dorey) Elliott; granddaughter, Molly Elliott; Joyce’s children, Joe (Diane) Prosa, Christie (Dan) Swanson, and Kathy (Bill) Hamre and their children and grandchildren; sister, Regis (Dr. Max) Harned; brother, Dennis (Barbara) Cowling; and many nieces and nephews who adored him. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joanne Cowling; and his parents.

A celebration of life will be hosted at a later date and announced when arrangements have been made.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Moments Hospice and the VA Hospital in Madison for the compassion, dignity, and care they provided to Philip and his loved ones. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
