Obituary
EVANSVILLE - Nell Elizabeth Weisensel, age 67, of Evansville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 19, 2026. She passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Nell was born on March 6, 1958, in Madison, the daughter of George and Pearl Sponem. She married William "Bill" Weisensel on July 1, 1989, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Nell was employed at Melster Candies and later with Exclusively Roses and Stoughton School District, where she worked for over 20 years, retiring in 2024.
Nell was a deeply devoted and active member of Faith Lutheran Church, where her faith remained the steady center of her life. She found joy in many simple, beautiful pursuits-cross-stitching, embroidery, tending her flower gardens, cooking, camping, boating, working through crossword puzzles, and exploring state and national parks. Nell also treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Nell is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 36 years, Bill; four children and their spouses, Jessica (Joel) Benewich, Erika (Josh) Peterson, Carissa (Nick) Olszewski and Matthew (Amanda) Weisensel; grandchildren, Emma, Aiden and Owen Benewich, Leona and Clay Peterson, Cooper Olszewski; bonus granddaughters, Beverly and Gwyneth Schneider; siblings, Louise Mayhew, Russell (Denise) Sponem, Philip Sponem and Glen Sponem; siblings-in-law, Mike Weisensel, Patti (Mike) Glass, Diane (Paul) Becker, Greg (Beth) Weisensel, Bruce Weisensel, and Joe (Judy) Weisensel; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Pearl; sisters, Mary (Donald) Roever, Edith (Kevin) Kerr; brother, Theodore (Beth) Sponem; nephews, David and Daniel Kerr; brother-in-law, Jack Mayhew; parents-in-law, James and Leona Weisensel; in-laws, Debbie Weisensel, Steve Weisensel; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 143 Washington St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with the Rev. Jeff Hendrix presiding. Burial will take place at Busseyville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sursum Corda School or Faith Lutheran Church of Oregon, Wis.
