Obituary

MADISON - Nick Hanuschewicz, age 85, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 22, 1940, in Poland, the son of Walter and Pauline (Zalewski) Hanuschewicz.

Nick graduated from Madison Central High School in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army as military police for three years. He married Maureen “Pepper” Viramontes on April 27, 1963. He worked as a police officer for the City of Madison Police Department, for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

Nick was a loving husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa. He had a big heart, and was always willing to help when needed. He was a longtime member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey, softball, bowling and surfing. His favorite past times were fishing and gardening. He was happiest with a rod in his hand, his hands in the soil and a good cigar on hand. Nick and Pepper loved taking road trips together, exploring Wisconsin and traveling across the country. He cherished Monday morning breakfasts, cheering on football and baseball games, and-most of all-spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, proudly attending their sporting events and celebrating their accomplishments.

Nick is survived by his children, Michael (Kelli) Hanuschewicz and Katherine (Kirk) Solberg; eight grandchildren, Justin (Cosmina) Hanuschewicz, Jordan (Chris Azarsa) Hanuschewicz, Royal (Kayla) Rasmussen, Kara Hanuschewicz, Jessica (Jerry) Schmidt, Morgan (Casey) Howard, Nicholas (Amanda) Chiono and Tony (Desiree) Chiono; great-grandchildren, Forest, Bear, Alex, Jayden, Noella, Eloise, Tripp, Harper, Rogan and Falynn; brother, Michail (Kathy) Kukawica; mother-in-law, Marian Viramontes; sister-in-law, Charlene (John) Schembra; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pepper; daughter, Stephanie Chiono; parents, Walter and Pauline (Kukawica); brother, John (Sharon) Hanushewicz; and father-in-law, Maurice Michael Viramontes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at CATHEDRAL OF ST. BERNARD PARISH CENTER, 2438 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, with Father Michael Radowicz presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday. Burial will follow in Windsor Congregational Cemetery.

Mike & Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing, I have so many wonderful memories from over many many years of our families hanging out (fishing trips to Ashland, softball games, and so much more) Your dad and mine had a special bond as police officers. Let all the great memories help you through this difficult time... My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Condolences to the extensive family and friends of Nick and Pepper (RIP). Nick was an unforgettable fellow, and respected colleague to many in Madison Police Dept and thoughout the City services and citizens. Young officers looked up to him for training and support and citizens trusted him for his exceptional common sense to help with their problems. He will be greatly missed. RIP
