Obituary
MADISON - Rosemary E. “Rose” Berke, age 90, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Meriter Hospital. She was born on October 31, 1935, in Humbolt Park, Chicago, Ill., the daughter of John Barr and Geneieve (Kulat) Olsen.
Rose graduated in 1954 from Trinity High School in River Forest, Ill. She went on to attend UW-Madison, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in modern dance. She later dedicated her career to supporting students as a guidance counselor at Sun Prairie High School, until her retirement in 2000.
Rose was open, honest and direct-an independent and strong leader who remained loyal and a lifelong friend to many. Spicy and feisty in the best ways, she cared deeply for her students and was always willing to advocate fiercely for their needs, leaving a lasting positive influence on countless young lives. Rosemary also had a deep love for her dogs and enjoyed training Shelties and Golden Retrievers. She found joy in gardening and flowers, swimming, dancing, photography and spending summers in Door County. She was a devoted Wisconsin Public Radio listener and supporter and spent many years as a member of the Prairie Athletic Club, where she formed lasting friendships.
Rose is survived by many special friends who truly are her family.
