Obituary

MADISON - Joseph Michael Searls, age 41, of Oregon, Wis., passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2025. He was born on May 23, 1984, and bravely faced many challenges throughout his life with alcoholism and mental illness, yet he worked tirelessly to overcome them. His journey reflected resilience and courage, even in the most difficult times.

Joe was a creative soul with a deep love for art and photography. His passion for learning never wavered as he earned his undergraduate degree from Edgewood College and later completed his MBA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Professionally, he dedicated much of his career to marketing and communications within the healthcare sector.

Known for his compassion and generosity, Joe gave freely of his time and talents. He supported numerous causes, from holiday shopping for families in need, writing letters from Santa, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, volunteering for WPR telethons, and serving meals to the community during the holidays. His kindness touched countless lives.

Joe was a proud pet parent to his beloved cats, Gio and Azy. He is survived by his mother, Angie (Angeline Pizzolato) Searls of Verona; his father, Bill (Linda Kohlmeyer) Searls of Prairie du Sac; his siblings, Jarred Searls of Evansville, Gina (Searls) Corrigan of Blue Mounds and Jessica (Searls) O’Hearn of McFarland; and nine cherished nieces and nephews. His Aunt Sherry (Dwight) Allbaugh held a special place in his heart, as did extended family and dear friends, including Zorba Paster and family, Sue Schmid, Alyssa (Madrigal) Tromp, Zachary Madrigal, Rolf Severtson, Jess (Sanderfoot) Benson, Jayson Talaue, Colin Mascarenhas, Penny and Vanessa Paster, the Weigan family, “Kook” Oppliger and many more.

A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated nursing staff of the University of Wisconsin Neuro-ICU and the organ donation team for their exceptional care, compassion and professionalism during this difficult time.

Thank you to all who brought joy and color to Joe’s life. He leaves behind nothing but love.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Joe’s memory through a donation to one of the causes close to his heart: National Alliance on Mental Illness of Dane County (namidanecounty.org) or Underdog Pet Rescue (underdogpetrescue.org).

Honoring Joe’s final wishes, no public services will be held. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
