Obituary

MONONA - Glenn H. Johnson passed away peacefully in Monona, Wis., the community he called home for over 55 years. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to J. Harold and Eleanore I. Johnson, Glenn was their beloved first son.

Glenn's legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren: his son, Kurt (Pam), and their children, Sydney, Ellie, and Kage of Richland, Wash.; and his daughter, Maia, and her children, Barret and Avery of Madison, Wis. He is also survived by his brother, Leigh (Joan) Johnson of Minnesota and their children, Aaron and Lindsey, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A proud graduate of Johnson High School in St. Paul (1959), Glenn earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Minnesota in 1963. His passion for teaching brought him to Madison, where he began his career at Sherman and Gompers Junior High Schools. He continued his education, earning a master’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1968.

Glenn's dedication to education extended beyond the classroom. After serving as a Middle School Learning Coordinator, he became the Central Office Curriculum Coordinator for Mathematics and Science for the Madison Metropolitan School District, a position he held with distinction for 26 years.

Retirement in June 1998 opened a new chapter in Glenn's life. Beginning in January 1999, he embraced the snowbird lifestyle, spending over 25 winters in Mesa, Ariz. There, he combined two of his greatest loves-teaching and community-by leading the computer club, all while enjoying countless rounds of golf under the Arizona sun.

Glenn had a remarkable gift for bringing people together and making friends wherever he went. His warmth, generosity, and genuine interest in others touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and neighbors, all of whom were enriched by knowing him.

Family will be hosting a celebration of life at the GREEN LANTERN RESTAURANT, 4412 Siggelkow Road, McFarland, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Friends and family are welcome to come together to honor Glenn and share the memories we hold close.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be gifted in Glenn’s name to Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg (agrace.org/donate). Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

A second dad growing up, I can still hear his chuckle at all our antics growing up over the years. Thanks Glenn for raising an amazing daughter and sharing her with us.

Glenn was a professional colleague, mentor and most importantly, a friend. I had the memorable opportunity to work with him in the central office of the Madison Metropolitan School District for several years. I learned a great deal from Glenn and I will always hold these experiences as special parts of my career and my life.

It was always a pleasure to be in Glenn’s company whether in the educational workplace or on the golf course. He included me in his group of golfing friends years ago and the group always benefitted from Glenn being our ‘statistics guy’ and a gracious host for our semi-annual gatherings. I have wonderful memories of golfing with Glenn and watching him continually search for that putter that made everything. He is already missed by all who knew him. Steve Bentin
