Obituary

MADISON / MOUNT HOREB - Dagny Dewitt, age 74, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025. She was born on May 5, 1951, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Obert and Winnefred Berge.

Dagny grew up on the family farm and graduated early from Mount Horeb High School. In 1980, she moved from the Mount Horeb / Blue Mounds / Barneveld area to Madison. For many years she worked for TDS Telecom as a secretary to the vice president, and she stayed with them until her retirement in 2018. She also provided day care throughout her life. In her younger years, she was a member of West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church, where she had been confirmed, and was most recently a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Madison.

Dagny was often described as the kindest person people had ever met in their life. She was dedicated to all of her family, loved family time, and took care of many family members throughout her life. Dagny had an exceptionally caring heart. She was also a wonderful holiday host and an excellent cook, often preparing her boys’ favorite dish, goulash. No one ever left her table hungry-she made sure everyone’s favorites found a place on the menu.

Reliable, dedicated, hardworking, and self-sufficient, Dagny did whatever it took to care for her family. The things that truly mattered in life were the things she excelled at. She always spoke kindly of others, reflecting the warmth and generosity that defined her.

Dagny is survived by her sons, Ian (Melissa) Gehrmann and Jason (Kristy) Gehrmann; grandchildren, Jake Gehrmann, Joey Gehrmann, Desiree Gallegos and Mia Gehrmann; sisters, Audrey Digernes and Kristie Berge; and brothers, Karsten (Jackie) Berge, Lawrence Berge, Arvid (Denise) Berge and Dale Berge. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Martin Berge; and brother-in-law, Arne Digernes.

A funeral service will be held at West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church, 2962 Church St., Blue Mounds, at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, with Vicar Jim Ranney presiding. Burial will be held at West Blue Mounds Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Dagny was my mentor back in 1996 at TDS Telecom where we worked as administrative assistants in Network Services. She was the epitome of kindness, grace and professionalism. I don't remember her ever saying a harsh word to or about anyone, but I do remember she liked plain bagels with butter (her go-to order for our morning Panera runs). I'm so very sorry for your loss. The world needs more people like Dagny. She was an amazing colleague and friend who included me into her circle when I needed it the most. She will be dearly missed.

I remember Dagny when I first moved to Wisconsin. She was a good friend and gave me a few of her recipes. I was sorry to learn she had passed. She will be missed by many. Lynne (Haag) O'Donohue.
