POYNETTE - Alan Paul Vonderohe, a cherished husband, brother, uncle, and esteemed educator, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in Poynette, Wis. Born on October 7, 1947, in Charles City, Iowa, Alan's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to knowledge, family, and the simple joys of nature.


Alan's formative years in Iowa laid the foundation for a life of intellectual pursuit. After graduating from Danville High School, he furthered his education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Ph.D. His passion for learning and teaching led him to a fulfilling career as a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in 2009.


Alan's love for Gretchen Eisinger was a constant source of joy in his life. Their marriage was a testament to mutual respect and shared interests, creating a bond that was both deep and enduring. Together, they navigated life's challenges and celebrated its triumphs, always finding strength in each other's company.


Alan is survived by his devoted wife, Gretchen; his sisters, Rebecca Schmidt and Elaina Smith; brother, Geary Smith; and his niece and nephew. Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Vonderohe and Jean Smith, who instilled in him the values of integrity and compassion.


Beyond academia, Alan was known for his involvement in various clubs and associations. His analytical mind and leadership skills shone brightly during his tenure as President of the local gem and mineral club in Madison. He also shared his expertise and camaraderie as a member of the Wisconsin Surveying Club. These communities benefited greatly from his intelligence and dedication.


In quieter moments, Alan found solace in fishing, a hobby that allowed him to connect with nature and revel in the tranquility of the outdoors. His love for animals was evident in his affection for his three cats, who provided him with unconditional love and companionship throughout his life.

I was one of his students at the UW in the 1990's. I remember him taking us out to lunch and asking who was going to take his place someday. None of us ever imagined being able to fill his shoes, but he believed in us and in public service, and that wasn't lost on us. I haven't filled Prof. Alan Vonderohe's shoes by any measure, but I teach land surveying in tech school now, and I don't think I would have taken that leap without his example and encouragement. I knew Al through many years of his help with the Photogrammetry Unit at the WisDOT. I enjoyed his intelligence, laughter and smile.

Herman Kuhn was my stepdad and introduced me to Al. He was one of the smartest and funniest people I ever had the pleasure of meeting. I have fond memories of fishing and being educated on "rocks" by Al. Rest easy.

Alan was one of my inspiration professors at UW in the late 1980's which led me to pursue the emphasis in surveying within the Civil and Environmental Engineering program. I had to made sure he and the other professors paid up their coffee dues in the survey equipment key room! Summer practicum in the arboretum with his leadership was a great experience. I was fortunate to also work with him professionally during my early career at WisDOT. I will always appreciate his knowledge, guidance, and humor. My sincere condolences.

Al was a real mensch – “a person of integrity and honor” as defined by OED. For me, he was a mentor, a friend, and fellow liar about big fish {-; As we sat in his boat waiting for that giant sturgeon to grab a ball or worms, he reminisced about surveying and rocks and cats and particularly about Gretchen, the love of his life. My deepest sympathy for her and all the other people he loved and inspired.
