CROSS PLAINS - Jerome R Virnig, age 89, of Cross Plains, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, at Alden Meadow Park. He was born on March 3, 1936, in Cross Plains, the son of John and Margaret Virnig.


Jerome graduated from Middleton High School. He was united in marriage to Mary Virnig, on August 25, 1960, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Middleton. After High School Jerome joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany and France, working as a heavy machine operator. After the Army, he was employed by Wisconsin Brick and Block for nearly 40 years. After his retirement from Wisconsin Brick and Block he worked part time at Saeman Lumber in Cross Plains.


Jerome loved to snowmobile and boat, spending lots of time up at the family cabin, near Park Falls Wisconsin. He cherished his time with his family and friends and always welcomed everyone. Jerome enjoyed many hours of playing euchre with his dear friends. Jerome was very passionate about his faith. He was proud to be a United States Army Veteran.


Jerome is survived by his daughter, Katherine "Kathy" (Stephen Gochenaur) Virnig; son, Michael Virnig; grandchildren, Luke (Grace) Virnig and Ben (Hailey) Virnig; great-grandchildren, Mathieu Virnig and Henry Virnig; daughter-in-law, Michele (Ron) Virnig; brother, Pete Virnig; sisters, Charlotte (Willy) Hefty and Rosie (Dave) Ballweg; brothers-in-law, Marvin (Judy) Ripp and Vince Ripp; sister-in-law, Julie Ripp; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; son, Philip Virnig; his parents, John and Maragret Virnig; brother, Jim Virnig; his in-laws, Mary and Nick Ripp; brother-in-law, Avitus Ripp; and sister-in-law, Sarah Ripp.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday.


Memorials may be made to Special Olympics. He was very thankful to the owners and employees at The Shoe Box for their long-term employment and care of his son, Michael.
