Obituary

MADISON - A Christian through Baptism, Philip J. Dzick, age 81, of Madison, died to this world on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on January 12, 1944, in Madison, Wis., the son of Henry and Ethelind (Jersild) Dzick.

A graduate of East Side High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Phil spent more than 33 years in quality assurance for Oscar Mayer Foods, before retiring in 1999. Thereafter, he was employed locally in a variety of roles, mostly involving customer service.

Phil's volunteer activities included teaching CPR for the American Heart Association and facilitating distribution of fraternal funds provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. He also enjoyed writing and singing lyrics to advertise the Annual Bike-a-thon for Bethel Horizons, a successful fund raiser for many years.

Phil was an avid supporter of Wisconsin athletics. For years, he often led cheers for the Badgers Men's Hockey team and he sometimes led cheers for the Badgers football team (on the road) as well as the Women's Hockey and Volleyball teams. His school spirit was continually uplifted by the sight and sounds of the Wisconsin Band under the energetic direction of Professor Mike Leckrone.

In his lifetime, Phil received immense satisfaction from encouraging others in worthwhile pursuits.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ethelind; and brother, Reverend Peter. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Mary Lou; as well as numerous beloved relatives and friends.

A service of remembrance will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, where his faith was confirmed and nurtured. The service will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025, with Pastor David Wrightsman presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A luncheon will be held at the church after the service.

Memorials to Bethel Lutheran Church, Bethel Horizons or the University of Wisconsin Band would be a fitting recognition of Phil's interests. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and fellow Badger Women's Hockey supporters, Phil! We will fondly remember helping him spell out "BADGERS" at the games. We're still waiting for that "Little something special in our paychecks this week" as regularly promised by him. Phil will forever be in our hearts, MaryLou too! Wishing you much love and peace during this difficult time! The Bahrs - Brian, Cindy and Mackenzie

Phil was a humble and great man! Our daughters Brooke and Brittany played for the Wisconsin women’s hockey team. They always checked to see if Phil was there when they hit the ice. What a loss. We are so lucky to have been a small part of his life.

Phil will definitely be missed! His cheers at UW Hockey games (men and women) were always terrific and kept the crowd in good spirits. I also enjoyed his sense of humor! Good memories to focus on at this time, and hugs to Mary Lou from Karen Schwarz.
